Thinking of replacing my stock 255/75-17 BFG KM2s with Nitto Ridge Grappler 285/70-17 (C load range) on stock MOAB 17x7.5 wheels. No lift. Any thoughts on fit, road noise? Realize I will have a 1-2 mph speedometer change needed for diameter change. Tire weight difference only seems to be about 8 lbs each tire with the 285s. Most concerned about fit but seems like it will work. What do you think?

fitment will be perfectly fine. i have no experience with those tires so i couldnt tell you about road noise. i did make a similar tire transition myself. didnt really need to recalibrate the speedo. it probably helps some but worth the cost? not sure. definitely helped when jumping to 35s though.

Thanks for the reply. The part I am struggling with is whether the change is worth the $. I plan to spend most off-road time in the sand, so I thought having more tire width and a hybrid or AT-type tread would be better in the sand, as I heard the KM2s don’t do that well in the sand even when aired down, but haven’t heard from anyone with direct experience with the Stock KM2s in the sand. Decisions, decisions...

I replaced the stock tires and wheels with Mopar Gear wheels and Nitto Ridge Grappler 285/70-17 116Q. Tires are quiet and grip well in the rain. Haven’t had a chance to take off-road yet so I can’t speak to that.

Thanks for the reply - do you have the offset and backspacing for the wheels you used?

Here’s the description of the Gear wheel from Mopar.

The Genuine Mopar Cast Aluminum Wheel comes in 17x8.5 with 5.22in Back Space (+12 offset). With a load rating of 1,950lbs with a 71.54mm pilot bore these wheels are designed to fit perfectly on your Wrangler JK, JL and Gladiator JT. Comes in a durable polished silver finish and includes color matching Jeep center cap

I'm looking to do the same tire mod with my MOAB as well....curious if you put the Ridge Grappler's on yet? I am looking at the LT285/75 on the stock MOAB wheels. From what I've read on here, seems like they should fit without a lift.

The KM2's that came stock with our Moabs (my personal opinion ONLY) was a disservice to us. I have Nitto RG now (though I am running 37 x 12.5) and they are leaps and bounds better than the KM2's (quieter by a LONG shot and a significantly smother ride). The 285's are only an inch taller than the 255's. You'll be fine on all fronts.

I agree, not impressed with the KM2’s either! Thanks for the info. I’m between the 285/75 or the 285/70....is the 75 more narrow than the 70?

TBH, the difference between the 70 and the 75 is insignificant. It'll likely come down to price and availability between the two.

ok thanks...last ? Lol you know if these will fit with the rear spare mount? Also, will the extra weight be an issue? Was thinking about the reinforced mount if needed. Thanks!

You're going up an inch in height and a little on weight. Basically you're going to the Rubi size which is loaded on the stock carrier. You should be fine. At 35", the vast majority of people are fine. At 37".....completely different story.

No - sorry - haven’t pulled the trigger yet. Have been spending the money and time on installing a Warn winch and recovery gear. That is now done. Next step is likely replacing the fogs with some Baja Designs Squadron-R Pros and refocus on the tires.

Just replaced my Moab stock BFG 255/75/17 with Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus 285/70/17.

If you are looking for a AT tire with fantastic road capabilities, I would strongly recommend these. The road noise went from a 9, to not being able to hear them at all. Drivability is extremely good! Also, all of the reviews I read on the Scorpion have very positive reviews for off-road capabilities. Was also concerned with the visual difference of the tires, the new design really enhanced the appearance of my Moab! Hope this helps........
