Anyone besides me having problem with Mickey Thompson Baja Boss tires around sharp rocks? I do a lot of trails with rocks and boulders and feel I'm getting far too many sidewall cuts. Yesterday, I had to change a flat on Elephant Hill. I'm running Baja Boss 37 all terrain tires. Over the past 3 years, I've had three warranty replacements for sidewall cuts, now the flat yesterday, and there are a few other cuts on the tires I'm going to need to patch before they open up.
My research tells me that perhaps this isn't the best tire for the wheeling I do and that there are others with stronger sidewalls such as Nitto, etc.
Anyone run into this same issue? thanks

I've tried pretty hard to cut my sidewalls. Still no luck. I like the Mickey Thompson BBAT sidewall. Sometimes I think the luck of the draw is just gonna pick you and there's nothing you can do except stay home.

MT is pretty aware of the sidewall issues I think. There's a reason the Baja Boss MT XS has 4 plies to its sidewall instead of the 3 found in the standard BB MT and AT

Mickey Thompson | Baja BossĀ® XS

Sidewall cuts do happen wheeling, but this is smelling a lot like the weaker sidewalls of the KM2 that'll require a product update to correct. Seen a lot of reports of BB sidewall issues over the past year or so, given their popularity.

Too many variables. I think once you’re talking about a variety of people, driving off road, aired down at different PSIs, driving different speeds, in a variety of conditions you’re not going to get more than hasty generalizations and hearsay. Even on the same trail the conditions change.

Until manufacturers come up with a sidewall test for off road tires that’s measurable and repeatable it’s a difficult thing to research with any accuracy.

I gashed open the sidewall of my Mickey Thompson Baja Boss MT coming down an icy snowy road still aired down after wheeling and slid sideways so the rear tire’s sidewall impacted a sharp rock on the side of the mountain. What do we conclude from that? Probably nothing. Two of us cut an OEM BFG 35 aired down wheeling a low moderate trail going through a narrow area on the same day. Again what conclusion? IDK.

Sounds like you’re ready to try another tire though.

I’m convinced given the opportunity I can wreck any tire manufacturers shit. Bad driving. Slide off a wet rock into a sharp rock. Miss a sharp tree root ā€œcamouflagedā€ on the side of the trail. Etc.

I am honestly surprised I havent ruined a sidewall on the ko2 35s I have especially with the way my wheels look

I just think it's easier to pull off with some makes than others.

For instance, my buddy I wheel with most often ran 35x12.50 Toyo Open Country ATIIIs for a long while, till they were almost bald. Normal wheels, no beadlocks, and I've seen his tire sidewall literally pinch and twist around a tree root poking straight into the side when aired down and wheeling. Zero marks on the sidewall and zero damage, even though I could have sworn it was gonna tear. I was watching it happen and thinking about where we could change the flat and where the tools we'd need were stored. But, nothing. One of the crazier things I've seen a tire do and come away without issues.

With my old JK, my KM2s would come home with flaps torn in the sidewalls from far easier rubs and scrapes.

Yeah the only real issue you've had is the mismatch between tire width and wheel width making it easy to burp the air out. Hoping once you move to 37x12.50s that stops happening lol

Im even thinking the c rated sidewalls didnt help either. With the stiffer D (giggity) of the BBAT and the extra height I hope the few issues I had fix themselves.

My Baja Boss ATs have quite a few cuts from wheeling, but they don't seem to have had any effect, nor have any of the chunks fallen out - which reminds me I need to get some tire glue to re-bind those... I just figure it's part of wheeling? šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Now you need to take the jinx off your janx (Riddick)
They are almost dead and the 37s will go on soon, next wheeling trip also isnt going to be a crazy one just a quick camping trip around Estes Park on the 12th.

Only a few local trails for us until I do John Bull in July. It will be the hardest trail I’ve done so far. I’m sure I’ll have to leave both lockers on…the entire time. Hopefully nobody is on the trail that day without both their lockers on…the entire time. šŸ˜‚

Shit looking at some of your pictures you should be more than fine if you get Portals installed too before hand.
