I don’t want to offend you, but maybe you could look at conversions made for disabled people - some companies install a system where the clutch + manual transmission are left in place, and just add an electric command to control the conventional clutch (Drivematic or something like that).

Fractured knee cap and severe torn acl. I would have chosen an auto over a manual when I purchased the jeep but couldn't pass up on the good deal.
Sorry to hear that. That actually sounds like you might be out of a manual long term depending on recovery and future ability to use the leg. I know a manual brings a lower price typically on resale but there is a niche in the Wrangler world that searches for it and is willing to pay the automatic up charge. Maybe it would be best to postpone the trip or at worst ride shotgun to further assess your knee.

You might wind up needing to buy an automatic and moving your build to it. You will lose money selling the manual as is and then building up the automatic

Long story short I have to have surgery on my left knee and won't be able to wheel my jeep for possibly 3 to 4 months. So I have searched all over and nothing really comes up about anyone doing this swap. I can do all the work myself and source the parts but am not sure about what I need to do with the computer stuff. Any advice is appreciated. And NO selling or trading in my jeep is not an option, I have it built just the way I want it. Thanks
The price of parts and the unknowns of computer problems after the change. I would just park it for the 3-4 months or sell it. Not worth the efforts

If you were closer, I’d offer to swap my auto for your manual, and I’d wrench with you to learn. The MT was the only option missing/where I compromised when looking for a used JL a few weeks back.

In any case, maybe you can find someone who wants to swap with you?

Good luck and work hard for that full recovery ??

From my searches for parts should be able to do it for less then 5k. And I have a big trip to Moab at the end of next month. But may have to watch from the passenger seat.
If your Moab trip is your major concern, maybe spend some of that 5k on a rental Jeep once you get to Moab. There are a lot of nice options there.
Then you'd have an excuse to go back later with your Jeep.

A quick question for clarification, do you not see yourself being able to use the manual after your all healed up from your surgery? Or is the auto just so you can use the Jeep while healing?

Now that makes sense to rent an auto for the week. From what the doctor is telling me if all goes to plan should be close to 100% when I'm all healed up.

So you want to spend a bunch of money to swap the trans for what will amount to 3-4 months of not being able to shift the manual? Park it and drive something else is my vote.
That's what my wife had to do a few weeks after we bought the Jeep she broke her ankle badly. Between that and getting older every day when I ordered my Challenger I grudgingly opted for the auto trans.

Awesome. Probaby best course of action.

I only had a meniscus tear clean up surgery on my right knee and it sucked to recover from that comparative minor knee repair.

But after a few months of PT I could squat again "ATG" .

Good luck!

Hi,

As mentioned you will be money ahead selling and rebuilding a automatic Jeep.

If you choose to do a swap, a big hurdle maybe the transmission tunnel as in the Challenger the A8 is much larger than the manual transmission, to my limitedknowledge, not sure on how or if the Jeep has 2 different floor humps between the two transmission, but the current manual looks rather narrow vs how big a A8 is.

Goodluck with the decision and surgeries,

Regards,
Jim

I wasn't saying you should do an engine swap, I was saying it transmission swap isn't cheap, in a roundabout way. ?

You should have definitely led with the fact that you have something that's not going to allow you to drive manual again. The three to four month healing time part with no explanation was very confusing.

I mean if it's not your daily driver, and you got the time, and the money, sounds like a fun project. They'll be forewarned you're probably looking at about a $15,000 job minimum. I haven't checked out transmission cost recently, but I know they're not cheap! That's also assuming you do all the work yourself.

All the same, man after my own heart if you do go through with it! ? ;)
My doctor said after surgery and pt I should be back to 90- 100% normal. So driving a manual shouldn't be a problem. I just hate missing out on wheeling trips. I just wanted to see if the swap was as simple as it is in a jk, witch it definitely is not.

If that's the case, then ya, I'd definitely look into renting an automatic Jeep while there.
It would be a lot of work to go to an auto from the manual. New trans, new or reflashed ECM to control the auto, all the sensors and wiring harnesses, shift linkage, probably a new center console or atleast the front section, new drivelines, new skidplate/crossmember. I'm sure there are other small things I'm not thinking of.
Yep, definitely a case for a rental Jeep.

Last spring I was done there and ran into a couple in a rental. They said it was cheaper per day the longer you rent.

Good luck on the Jeep endeavor and good luck and quick healing on the knee.
