Manually shifting 8-spd auto - bad?

I have a 2014 Compass, and I tend to "manually" shift gears a lot to get around the very lethargic automatic's behavior. I read somewhere the Compass's transmission was designed for that and it won't lead to problems. Does anyone shift their 8-spd Jeep's this way, and is there any guidance on this from FCA?
