Been noticing this annoying rattle that occurs when I depress the gas pedal as the vehicle is coasting anywhere between 20 and 40 mph. It is very quick, only lasting a half second or so, but it happens every time. The rattle isn't that loud either...I can only hear it when the sound bounces off a curb, jersey wall, etc. I only use top tier gasoline, and it seems that octane rating has no effect either. Anyone else notice this too?

First thing I'd check is that all the skids bolts are tight underneath.

Yes, everything is tight. This is clearly not a frame or chassis rattle though...it is definitely coming from the engine.

If you can only hear a noise when it's being rebounded off other objects then you probably don't need to worry about it. If it was an issue you'd be able to hear it at all times

Thanks. That's sort of what I was thinking too, but this is the first car in which I've heard a rattle like this since the 1970s/80s. Sort of reminded me of the various pings and rattles that were so common when car manufacturers were struggling with new Federal emissions requirements and integrating mitigation measures for the first time. Really got my attention even though it wasn't loud.

Coasting would imply, your foot off the gas pedal, zero load on the powerplant. Such a noise would imply something loose in the engine bay or chassis.

Now if you are hearing this with foot on gas, engine on load, then this potentially changes things, "Ă  la federal emissions", circa 70/80's as you implied in the previous post.

Just wanted to confirm, which scenario are we dealing with here?

When coasting between 20 and 40mph and then depressing the gas pedal, I hear the rattle. So yes, the gas pedal is depressed and the engine is under load.

This sounds (pardon the pun) like the infamous, 3.6L low rpm pinging issue.

Even the owners manual makes an obscure reference to it lolll ?

FWIW, I think I found a cure for it. I haven't had mine reoccur in over 2.5 years, even when living on the edge with 87AKI.

I have procrastinated to post my solution, as it is a bit involving, and I must also translate the procedure, per my mechanic from an other language.

Thanks for reminding me about that owner's manual reference. I had actually forgotten about it, but I'm still pretty certain that the pinging still occurs in my engine with higher octane gasoline.

That said, I'm now intrigued by your solution and hope you are able to post it in the near future. Thanks in advance, and happy Jeepin'!

I will be posting the solution in that other "banned wrangler forum", as soon as I return to home base and have access to a larger screen with proper keyboard, so keep an eye for it there ?.

LOL...OK, got it. Even after being on this forum for more than two years, I still don't understand what's so wrong about the "other forum." I find it just as informative and entertaining as this one, but perhaps I'm missing something. Anyway, I appreciate the heads-up and look forward to reading more. Much appreciated!

You seem like a good chap, so I'll try and PM you first once I reach home base and get settled in.

No idea why it is banned, and frankly couldn't care less.
I will say this, that there has been an exodus of some good members from here over time, and for good reason, and I will leave it at that.

Not an exodus ONLY to that particular site BTW,, there are plenty of others as well. Just a FWIW ;).

Thanks brother. Sad that there had to be that much unnecessary drama, but I guess it's par for the course with all forms of social media. No rush on the PM and appreciate the info.

I always had pinging on 87. Didn’t do it when I ran 91. So I just kept using 91.

Hey I need to know this fix, how do I find out. I’m living with this pinging and worried about long term.
