Aloha all, first post here. Back in May my Jeep got the dreaded tick on the right side. Dealership did the work. 8 months later the lifters failed again on the right side. Dealership replaced the lifters, the cams, and the cam phaser. 2 days later the left side failed and started the tick. Tomorrow my jeep goes back to the dealership to have the lifters, cams, and cam phasers replaced. I told them to recheck the right side for any issues. I was told that I will be paying for the left side. Am I wrong to think that the dealership should be covering it due to the repair on the other side and metal shavings being found?

These horror stories are why we seldom get the opportunity to repair these engines anymore and go with complete replacement.

So are you saying once you get the tick, you're better off replacing the engine? Versus repair the damaged bank?

It depends on what you mean by “better off”. Mechanically? Of course it’s better to replace the engine that is filled with metal shavings. Financially, not so much. With the price of these engines, it is always a risk-reward decision to be made by the individual and their shop. Some engines we see damaged so badly we would never even offer to work on them. Some are worth the gamble. If it was going to take 6,000 to fix or 11,000 to replace, it’s a hard decision. If the repairability of the engine is in question, it should be replaced.
