Lifted Bump Stop Question

Bought my Jeep already lifted by a Jeep customizer in Florida. The rear end is brutal over road joints many times hearing and feeling a SLAM, which must be the suspension bottoming out. I looked underneath to find a riser bracket just about touching the bump stop. Should I remove the metal riser piece? Seems like my shocks and spring have a bunch of travel that would never be used with this in place.

Yeah, I’d definitely take that out, but you’ll need to run some bump on the axle… you should take out the spring and stuff the axle until tire hits or the shock bottoms out then measure the distance from jounce cup to the axle pad add a 1/2-1” to that number and that’s how much bump you need to put on the axle…….

You can run it on the street without any bump, but I wouldn’t recommend wheeling it, you’re liable to rip off a fender or bottom out a shock……

WTF !!!! That’s WAY excessive. You should only be adding about as much bump stop as roughly half or a bit more of your tire size increase. I had 2” of bump stop on 35s and now 3” for 37s.

Teraflex had a great bump stop kit that you can add 1/2” spacers to.

OK. I'm not sure why I didn't bother taking a peek underneath earlier. Totally resolved the slamming. Will look into the Teraflex. Thanks!

I'd double check the entire suspension. Because one of the following happened:
  1. A higher lift was installed and they quickly slapped in a lower lift for resale, forgetting to remove the higher lift's bump stop extensions. What else could they have overlooked in this rush job?
  2. They installed the lift using bump stop extensions that didn't come with the lift and they have no clue what they're doing. What else could they have screwed up?
  3. You played a practical joke on them in the past and this is payback.
Bottom line is that this is something that should never go out the door a professional Jeep customizing shop. The advice in this thread is correct but I'd go beyond that and look sideways at the entire suspension because of it.
