Just found out my 12/3/22 Build 4xe is under recall. Says repair parts are not available.

What are owners doing? Stop Charging? Leave outside? Run down charge and still park inside?

How big is risk? "A routine data review revealed 13 reported fires, and Jeep estimates that 5% of affected vehicles may have the defect."

13 of 100,000+ seems like a small risk.

My 4xe is not part of the recall but we have had a few Electric vehicles over the years about 5 total and each one had a similar recall and we didn't change a thing except for not leaving them plugged in overnight

Did you charge them at all or leave depleted?

At a minimum, install a LOUD smoke alarm in your garage. One with a remote that you can keep in your bedroom. Maybe something like this... https://www.amazon.com/X-Sense-Inte...prefix=remote+smoke+alarm,aps,112&sr=8-8&th=1 If you put one in the garage and two in the house, including one in your bedroom, you will be warned if something goes wrong in the garage. It is not worth the risk to your family, but with something like this, you can feel safe. Unless I am wrong, I think these battery fires usually smoke for a little while before they burst into flames...

I did some back of the envelope calculations:

Based on the numbers you have about a 1 in 11,500 chance of having a fire related to this recall issue (13 fires for ~150,000 potentially affected vehicles). That's less than 1/10 the risk of you having a kitchen fire in the next year (~160,000/year in the US for ~130M households). If it happens while you're driving I'd expect there to be lots of heads up that something is very wrong before it actually catches fire (warning light notifications first, then 10+ minutes of smoke in the cabin before it would erupt). Even so, your risk of having a fire related to this is still lower than your risk of dying in a motor vehicle accident in general (~1 in 7,000, based on ~40,000 MVA deaths in the US last year for ~280M registered vehicles).

I'm not trying to say it's not a problem, and I'm not saying that you shouldn't take steps to mitigate risk, but perspective is important too

I'm being cautious by not charging and not parking inside my attached garage for now, but I also feel like that is being very conservative and I'm still driving it without worrying about it.

Once I was recalled my plan was to discharge completely and not recharge but stil store in Garage. However, with real risk being small, I did charge up again for the pending Hurricane Milton, may need the extra battery power. Once that passes I will discharge and stop charging, haven't decided whether I will garage or not.

I made the same type of calculations back in 2015 when considering the risk of climbing in Nepal. My conclusion was similar to yours, there was a very small risk and I would be much more likely to die in a car accident while driving around the US.

I was far up in the mountains, at ~16,000ft when the devasting, 2015 earthquake hit. Luckily there were no significant injuries to anyone in my climbing party, but nearly 10,000 people died that day (and the following aftershocks).

Sometimes the very unlikely occurs.

I've been parking my Jeep outside and level 1 charging only occasionally ever since this 2nd recall. I'm not sure if I'll get lucky twice.

13 fires is a small number, plus we do not know how many fires were caused by things like wet chargers, bad cables, crooked install, bad level 2 systems (overloads) or other issues.

As of October 1, 2024, Jeep has recalled over 194,000 plug-in hybrid vehicles due to a fire risk, and the company has reported 13 fires:

  • Number of fires: 13 fires have been reported in parked vehicles

  • Number of vehicles recalled: 154,000 in the U.S., 14,000 in Canada, 700 in Mexico, and nearly 26,000 outside North America

  • Model years: 2020–2024 Jeep Wrangler and 2022–2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee

  • Estimated number of affected vehicles: 5% of affected vehicles may have the defect

Seems like all of the major manufacturers are having issues these days for whatever reason. What I find interesting about the latest 4xe recall is there is no real fix as of yet. Just suck it up and replace the battery already and be done. "Don't plug it in". Then WTF is the purpose of this rig? Stellantis is a joke. I plug mine in everyday outside. If I don't I'll be filling the tank every 3 days vs 5 or 6 days. Let the pos burn. 🔥:giggle:

For any sort of fire that can start in your garage - I've often read you should put heat detectors in your garage, and not smoke detectors. Smoke detectors can give false positives.

All you folks that are affected should pitch a fit and get a loaner. My 4XE is grounded at the dealership until the "fix" is applied. I had to jump through some hoops but got a loaner at no cost to me. Might be driving this loaner for two months for all I know.....
