So my last payment is coming up in one month on my 2021 heavily modified and accessorized Nacho JLU. It's has nearly 140k miles on it, and pretty much nothing has gone wrong. It does have a slight oil leak coming from somewhere but that hasn't caused any problems thus far. So my dilemma is do I now keep it with 140k miles or do I trade it in for something else? Don't get it wrong I love my Jeep and I kind of know that I always want a Jeep in my life. My main concern is that there is some catastrophic issue coming up right around the corner. Should I just take it and trade it in and get something else? That something else would have to be a convertible, sunroof would not do. There really is no substitute for a Jeep though. I'm rambling. Perhaps the best move would be to keep the Jeep, make it a second car and get another car. as my primary something like that I don't know. What would you guys do?. I definitely feel extended right now riding around in a vehicle with 140k miles and having it as my primary vehicle. Something about that doesn't sit right with me. Anyway, I welcome your input.

You’ve had no problems, some are plagued with them. I would keep it until we find out more about the upcoming next gen. then choose. The next gen or a “last call” JL.

As I see it there would seem to be two choices... One Trade it for another Wrangler. Second, if it is paid off, buy a second vehicle and the drive the Jeep part-time. I have two vehicles, and I leave the top and doors off the Jeep all summer, and if it could rain, I drive the car...

From a financial POV, the problem with a “heavily modified,” paid off, 140k Jeep… is in the “heavily modified” part of the equation. You’ll never see those dollars again. Think of it like the really nice wallpaper installed in your home. Sure, it’s lovely. But it doesn’t move the needle on the real estate “comps” vs. a house with semi-gloss marshmallow wall paint and white gloss trim. Them’s the maths.

So if you like your “wallpaper,” then just drive it into the ground. Like you said, it’s paid off.

Then when the catastrophe hits I have nothing to trade in. I'd be starting from Zero.

Why rush to pick up another payment?

Take your payment that you normally make and pay down other debt with half of it and put the other half into an account to save for future repairs.

You will take a large hit selling this and then factor in all your mods that no one will pay extra for.

I can honestly say none... Just change the oil regularly. I'm even still running the original beeak pads also.

You were at negative equity, and then you went and added more negative equity.

So now you’ve clawed your way back up to Zero through thrift, hard work, and time.

Congratulations.

Stop. Take the “W.”

Honestly, some people never get out of this hole.

New-car-smell is one helluva drug.

Why trade your Jeep away to get another payment. It's about to be paid for. Even a new engine is a helluva lot cheaper than a new car. Keep if for fun, and an extra vehicle, then get a nice something like a nice low miles used Mustang GT convertible, or a C7 Corvette.

I’ve done as I preach. I was waiting for a new 1974 Harley, when they came out they had been AMF’d and I didn’t like them. The dealer got my wanted 73 from San Diego. I screwed up and traded it in on a 91 Springer I thought I wanted… never liked it. Also got an 07 Harley after the 08’s were out and had changes I didn’t like, the 07 also sent from San Diego.

Og brake pads? That's nuts!

I'm a big fan of no car payment. Truthfully, the only reason i bought my JL was bc I won a contest and took the prize money and it paid for half of it. This makes my monthly payment on it is less than my wifes leased Honda monthly lol. With how expensive Wranglers are, I'd much rather go with a different brand if I were to spend full price and pick up an old TJ if i felt the need to get a wrangler. Or just keep DD my old XJ

Also not sure if you wrench at all but honestly outside of the engine/transmission (meaning catastrophic failures or full swaps specifically) just about anything else can be done in a driveway with hand tools and maybe a couple of rental tools. As someone else mentioned take the money from the monthly and save some and invest the rest.

At 140k miles you're looking at probably some general suspension maintenance, brakes soon lol, some fluids. All pretty doable and easier than just about any car the same age.

Save a couple of bucks, especially these days

This is my plan.. I have a 2021 WILLYS with 38K miles on it. I plan to pay it off.. keep it.. and take my payment.. put it away for upkeep.. and also save some for a big down payment on a second car and make that payment next to nothing.

Repairs are usually cheaper than payments. Keep what you’ve got and make a decision when you have to make one.
