The OP question is too vague. Since payment options vary from weekly, bi-weekly, to monthly, I have no idea what the actual question is.

Also, if it's about trying to obtain some analytics for who really cares what reason (it's just a jeep payment, not our financial history), the question needs to include vehicle year and model. And interest rate would probably be handy. As well as total payment. Down payment if any. And is it a finance or lease?

In other words, the OP question asks nothing, and every answer with a basic amount, provides no real answer.

But 8 pages! We're a very bored bunch with a lot of time on our hands here LOL

The 1999 TJ was the last time I went to a dealership to buy a vehicle, which was a painless experience, that was also the last time I did a test drive.

I look online for prices, send an email strike a deal, show up to sign the paperwork the same time I pick up the Wrangler, I also don't give them my phone number until it's a done deal.

Buying a $50k Jeep in cash does not make a person "rich". It means they had $50k of available cash at that point in time to spend on a discretionary vehicle purchase.
I believe in the context of this thread, where we are discussing what is "smart", that the intention behind that sentiment was that in order for spending $50k on a discretionary vehicle purchase to be "smart", one would need to be "rich".

Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying all vehicle purchases need to be smart. One could argue that buying a Jeep is general is not smart. Yet I just bought my third Jeep on Tuesday. There are those who look at vehicles as transportation appliances, and look down on anyone spending money on anything other than a used Toyota Prius. Fortunately I don't think we'll find any of those losers on this forum.

I think all discussions about buying vehicles inevitably ends up with people sharing anecdotal stories of how they blew up at, or one-upped, told-off dealership sales staff, and then stormed off.

Makes you wonder why purchasing a vehicle still has to be like that.
I'm finding some surprising exceptions. As mentioned I just bought another JL this week, and in the process I worked with two really great dealers. None of the classic BS, they respected me from the start, and made the process about as enjoyable as it could be. Hopefully this way of doing business will spread with time.

While we're at it

How about your salary?
Net worth?
Debt to income ratio?

This question really means nothing. You could have a 3 year loan at $1600/interest free, or an 84 month loan at some ungodly interest.

.....why?
Yeah...and how about your SS number and bank account numbers with passwords?

I'm not sure what "rich" is these days, but with any spend, I view "smart" in the context of does it meet one's goals? I think that's what matters.

I've also had some refreshing dealer experiences as of late - and also a few bad ones. I bought a pickup from a family-owned Chevy dealership, and they are always professional, I've bought from them a few times before. They know their stuff and so do I. We also picked up our new Wrangler a few weeks ago. The first few dealers were typical Stellantis snake pits. We chased non-existent listings, and the staff were licking windows and frothing at the mouth to swindle someone. I wasn't surprised.

The third dealer was an interesting find. I always avoided it because it's near a military base, for the reason that those dealers are typically high-pressure, inexperienced staff, and they thrive off of swindling young recruits and military families out of signing bonuses and guaranteed income. But, like the Chevy dealer, I ran into someone who was seasoned and was able to meet us where we are. The sales manager had his head screwed on and wanted to book an easy sale. No financing, no trade, no BS, and hold the sauce. 2nd easiest Jeep deal I've ever done.

You can certainly make that argument, I don't necessarily disagree. I just avoid using the term "smart" for that example. To me, "smart" is what is best for one's financial position. Being a bit adventurous and splurging on something one wants, but still not being flat out stupid about the expenditure, is a different thing to me.

Yeah that's basically how it went in my example too. I brought my own financing and the dealer knew right off the bat they couldn't touch it, so they never once mentioned payments. No extra random crap, they gave me their fee structure right up front, and once we said "go", we were pulling out of the parking lot in 30 minutes.

It's baffling that it can't just be that way everywhere.

I'm pretty sure anything but monthly is incredibly rare, at least in the US. Apparently other approaches are more common in Canada.

And why can't we click-to-buy direct from the manufacturer. I know the answer, the question is more rhetorical. We can't have nice things because of NADA and their insistence on preserving the cut for all the middle organizations like dealerships.

My payment varies from month to month based on how much I spend on new parts. Luckily no payments to the bank though.

Used car, for sure!

The last two vehicles I purchased new. I made up my mind before I went in.

I test drove the jeep only to let them know I was serious. Test drive or not, I was buying it. It was just the matter of numbers. Its a jeep its gonna drive like a jeep.

The second one I bought in 2023 when there was no inventory and had order and wait. I told them what I wanted. They told me how long the wait was. I paid a down payment. I saw and drove the car for the first time when picking it up. Its a civic its gonna drive like a civic.

Note that you test drove both before signing on the dotted line.

There are frequently posts here where someone bought a brand new Wrangler with an obvious defect. I always wondered how they'd be (insert appropriate derogatory term) enough to do that. Not test driving it would explain a lot.

Coke cut out their distributers and started owning the delivery business themselves, that didn't make the price of soda go down.
Dealers like any dealer of anything are in it for the buck, but with a little knowledge you at least get a somewhat personal experience.

Never pay cash.

Always take their financing, warranty, and force them to lower price.

Then usually within 2 months I pay off thier loan and cancel the expensive warranty. Longest I paid was 18 months, I got lazy paying it off.

My opinion, if you really can't afford the payoff, buy a cheaper means of transpo, could mean 80,000 mile used jk. Or toyota.
