Hello - this is my first post to this forum. (And, sorry, it’s a long one.) thank you in advance for any advice you may have.
I have a 2019 JLU Rubicon with some ongoing transmission (or more likely the electronics that control the transmission) issues. Vehicle drive train is completely stock with no modifications.
January 1, 2020 - Jeep 9 months old with 15,000 miles on it. In Mammoth Lakes CA for a week skiing, driving on snowy / slushy / muddy roads. Nothing unusual. On new years day, took the Jeep down to Mono Lake on a gravel road, also quite snowy / slushy (along with many other 2 wheel drive sedans on the same road.) Leaving the lake and getting back on the highway, a "Service Transmission" warning comes on. After about 2 minutes of driving it went off. Stopping for lunch, putting the vehicle in Park, the “service transmission” alert came on again as well as “the vehicle is not in park” “set handbrake to prevent vehicle movement”. After sitting for an hour, It started and drove fine for another 30 minutes back to Mammoth.
Stopping at the grocery store (extreme jeep use indeed) putting it in park, the “service transmission” alert came on again - along with the “ the vehicle is not in park” “set handbrake to prevent vehicle movement”. Now however, when placed in park , the P flashes on the shifter and on the info screen. (I have confirmed it is not actually in Park as I was able to push it forward a few feet.). In addition, when starting the vehicle, it will start and idle fine... until I take my foot off the brake, at which point it stalls immediately. Undriveable at this point.
Unfortunately, in this condition you cannot turn the vehicle “off” ... it’s still in the accessory on / run state (info screens all on, daytime Running lights on... ) So had no choice to leave it 'on' while i ubered back to condo to get Jeep roadside assistance / warranty support involved. (After finding a post on this forum, i eventually went back and pulled the battery cable.) Took Jeep over 17 DAYS to get the vehicle towed to a dealer who could actually service it. (That is a subject for a different post.)
Once at the dealer (Glendale CA Dodge Chrysler Jeep) received it, they worked on it for over 10 days, replacing a series of electronic components (nothing mechanical). When i finally picked it up some 35+ days after the breakdown, the explanation of what happened (and what had been done to fix it) was vague at best. Some corrosion of wiring / connectors had occurred; possibly due to my not cleaned the undercarriage after exposure to mud / snow ?! This was a perplexing explanation that inspired little confidence.
Over the next few months, Jeep has seen a few more highway miles, and some limited off highway travel in Big Bear and Sequoias - all forest roads. Nothing extreme in the least.
Flash forward to June 21, 2020 - I have left LA to spend 4 days travelling to Telluride CO via Bryce Canyon, Escalante, Moab. Spending a couple weeks in Telluride before taking the long way home via Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Glaciers, Hood River and Redwoods.
3 days into the trip, camped on BLM land outside Capitol Reef National Park, upon starting the jeep and attempting to put it in gear (drive, reverse, neutral) generates the "Vehicle Not in Park" error (similar to if one attempts to drive with the drivers door open) (Auto-Park 'feature'). Every 10 minutes i go back and try again to start it, put it in gear. After an hour, it finally goes into gear and am able to finish the drive to Telluride (skipping Moab for fear of the error returning). At this point, we had done maybe 100 miles of dirt road driving, and had crossed a maybe 20’ wide x 18” deep stream the night before.
Once in Telluride, Jeep has been driving fine. No sign of the error. However, we have several weeks and thousands of miles in remote areas planned and my confidence in the vehicle has been badly shaken.
Last Friday June 26th, Jeep towed the vehicle into Grand Junction for service . They are only one day into it, but cannot replicate the issue and are at a loss.
This does not appear to be a persistent issue with the JL … only 1 similar post I have found:
