It looks a tear in the composite material.
From the picture I can't tell if it's raised or relieved into the door. Wouldn't that area be sheet metal? That's why I wondered if maybe it's excess door adhesive. Kind of looks like it was there during the paint process also.

You act like JL's are falling apart driving down the road! Mine has been great as are the vast majority of them.
@That One Guy is a troll. he says this same line about JL's over and over and overrr. there are 10's of thousands of JL's in the wild now with a select few that have had some issues. get a grip bra.

don't respond to me - I can't read or write due to my middle ear being too close to my left wrist

I just stoped by the local dealer. They had 3 sport s. one of them had a 1 foot section of bad weld on the frame on the driver side. The rest did not appear to have any problems.
Where do I look for this I am ignorant to welding

Does anyone know if 2 door frames are produced by the same people, at the same factory,on the same line?

It'd be sweet if 2 doors somehow skirt this issue.

So how does the quality of these new JLU frames compare to the JK? It's not like Jeep re-invented the wheel. Hyundai Mobis built all the JK frames also.
I've personally not seen any issue with the JK/JKU frames from any off the 11 years of production. Some correct me if I'm wrong.

I wonder if the weld issues are from high demand causing rushing of frame building?

If a vendor whose sole purpose to make frames can’t do it right then then I’m concerned about all the components now! Anyone else thinking FCA goes with the lowest bidder? Haha

If anything they do seem to use a couple quality providers, like staying with Dana for axles and Besttop for tops. Apparently the new manual is from Aisin--a damned sight better than the old Fischer-Price Mercedes unit. Historically Wranglers have had quality frames, so I hope this is just an early snafu.

Thanks to this thread I was made aware of possible welding issues.
  • I added this to my delivery checklist and had the dealer put the vehicle on a lift so I could inspect from below.
  • Happy to report all weld lines looked smooth.
I just wanted to mention for all of you still awaiting delivery. Add it to your checklist but don't loose sleep over it ;)

Maybe it was just an issue on a couple early batches. Good to hear yours is all good. Perhaps I'll see if my dealer will do the same for me. Doesn't seem like a crazy request when you've heard of potential issues, right?

Not a crazy request at all. Part of "kicking the tires".

I too am wodering the same thing. If it's doable and if my Jeep exhibit the same issue when I receive it, I am wondering if I could just bring it to a body shop, have them patch it and paint over the fixes.

I don't know anything about welding, so that may be a stupid idea and possibly expensive?
Wouldn’t it void any warranty

Looked at the welds before buying ... asked Superior Jeep ahead of time to have the JL placed on a lift to check for fluid leaks, underbody damage and frame welds. All welds looked like they were covered by a dark translucent coating ... anti-rust coating?

A tech offer a special pen flashlight with a red laser light to look at the welds. Tech said one could not see anything without it. I brought my own high intensity pen light to look at welds. Most of the welds had good flow to them ... some I did not know what to think. Forgot to ask the tech what he thought of the welds.
