Hello group,

I have a 2020 Jeep Wrangler, upgraded from a 2003 era vehicle (not a jeep). Does anyone have any guidance on preparing the JL for welding? I see there is an auxiliary power system, and I don't want to cause any damage to the vehicles computer systems. There are much more electronics than I am used to, in the past I would just disconnect the battery and unplug the ECU if was welding near it. With this system, it seems to be an endless loop with the auxiliary system and the fuse block. I disconnected the battery and + terminal lug from the fuse block but still had voltage at the ECM. Thank you to anyone who has some insight. If there is a related post, send the link.

Thank you,
Travis

Good topic. I followed the instructions from a large thread on here disconnecting the negative lugs from both batteries (presumably) and still had power in the cab. I have yet to find a solution.

This is how I disconnect the batteries before I weld anything to the rig (you will need 10mm and 13mm wrenches):

1st: disconnect ground ESS battery from the main ground terminal.. separate and wrap in something that insulates it .. rubber something or a dry small cloth towel to avoid contact with the main ground battery terminal or anything else (important since doing this disconnects the ESS battery from the rig)

2nd: ground terminal from main battery.. also separate from the ESS battery ground terminal.. wrap it to avoid contact with the main ground battery pole / ESS ground terminal or anything else !!

3rd: disconnect Positive terminal and insulate ...

Now... my logic behind this sequence is ..... if you start with the Positive Terminal first and your wrench accidentally touches ground... bad thing.. you are short-cirtuiting the batteries.. not good!! .. but if you disconnect ground terminals first.. even if your wrench touches ground nothing happens... and once you disconnect ground terminals if you touch the ground with the wrench while disconnecting the positive terminal.. you are safe since there is no return path of electricity to battery ground since is disconnected..

Reconnecting is the reverse procedure... Positive terminal first.. Main Battery terminal second, ESS battery ground terminal third...

I have welded a lot of crap around my rig with this procedure and after reconnecting everything is back to normal..

BTW .. the tip about also disconnecting the ESS ground terminal comes from Youtub BleepinJeep channel... I saw it on one of their videos but I cannot find it..

Actually it is not necessary to disconnect at the Main's positive terminal.

If you do so, it is pretty common for a guy to screw up fooling with the Main terminal and they end up blowing a fuse in the Mopar Z Case Fuse Array when the pos. hits something metal.

Anyway, no need at all to disco at the pos terminal.

How to do total 12V disconnect:
