So a buddy of mine traded his JK in for a JLUR, but he kept the 35s from his JK. He tried putting them on but they won't fit. Is the bolt dimensions different from a JK to JL? And what do I look for when it's time for me to get rims for my JL?

It's the same 5x5 pattern, however the stud thread dimension has changed so the lug nuts wont work on the JL

OEM JK and JL wheels have the same width, offset and hub bore. This means backspace is the same too. JL studs are bigger so the wheel is a little tight going on but no biggy. I'm running JK wheels on my JLR.

Now, if your buddy had aftermarket wheels there might be an issue with backspace or the size of the studs.

Yeah they are aftermarket, and I was thinking of doing the same but the ones I've been looking at are shown on a JLU and I've seen them in a video on a JLU. Before I go ahead and buy is there anything in the description I should be looking for so I won't run into backspace or stud size issue?

Well, if they show them on JLU's the stud size should be fine.

As to backspace that is a kettle of fish. The answer depends on what size and brand tire you're looking at, if you go offroad, if you are going to lift and what "look" you are after. I'm running 35x11.5 Nitto's on a JLR with no lift and stock JK wheels. I wheel it hard and am happy with them on the street and trail but most likely will go 37's at some point.

like others have the same bolt patterns (5 on 5) the studs on the JL are 14 mm in diameter where as the JKs are 1/2" (12.7 mm). most aftermarket wheel builders will build their wheels for the 5x5 with 14mm lug holes before the JL was a thing to cover their bases, but there was a hand full of wheels made with just the JK in mind and they are built with only a 1/2" lug hole
