Please explain to me like I am stupid... What's with the tinted windshields? Here in CT it is popular and I am seeing more and more vehicles with it. I have my front doors tinted but just think a tinted windshield is asking for trouble, plus, how the heck do you see at night?
It definitely is not for everyone. The reasons I did it:
  • Security. I have several thousands of dollars worth of goodies within the Jeep at any given time. Most of it is securely locked up .... but things like my dash cams, radar detector, IFAK, Yaesu amateur radio, sunglasses, spare magazines, etc. remain in what would be "plain view". The less a potential thief knows/sees, the better. (Pics for reference)
  • Privacy. I don't want people to watch me pick my lady's nose at stoplights.
  • Comfort. I no longer get FLASHBANGED by other drivers' headlights at night. You know the ones.
  • Much improved temperature regulation. (Ceramic tint)
Lastly, it simply looks cool. And as Flannel Daddy would say:
"Nothing is more important than to look cool." :like:

To answer your questions.
  • I can see at night perfectly fine. Though everyone's eyes are different, do what makes the most sense for you.
  • Asking for trouble ... in a law sense? I've never been bothered about it anywhere in the US or Canada. I'm not surprised you're noticing more of them. I'd say at least 1 in 5 vehicles on the road are heavily tinted.

My ceramic tint:
30% windshield
5% front two windows
20% on all rear windows
(20% OEM + 20% Ceramic = 5% light transmission)

All car brands expect waves to each other, had 20 years of Corvettes, 15 years of BMWs, and just finished 6 years of Ford Escape waves….I’m all waved out

Well except for beautiful women in convertibles and exotic cars that I would sell body parts for…..they get very enthusiastic waves

WAVES FOR FORD EXCAPES?!? Sorry but when did this start? LOL I've never heard of or seen that one before.

I know it's a Subaru (namely WRX/STI), Corvettes, Jeeps (Wranglers/CJs particularly) and motorcycle thing. BMWs I could see especially for M types. Never just never heard of it for Escapes though...haha But those I listed I have heard about or dealt with personally.

I’ve had Wranglers off and on since the 80s. I currently have a JLR and a JTMojave. Back in the 80-90s I was busy with a stressful career and a young family, and we didn’t have Internet until the 90s, and I was only vaguely aware that waving was a thing. I was so preoccupied that I wouldn’t notice it much of the time, and rarely initiated it. Jeep people probably thought I was a jerk.

Eventually I became more aware and would wave if I thought about it.

Nowadays there are soooo many Wranglers and Gladiators around here, but I will initiate waves more of the time, and return them too. I really don’t care in the least if someone doesn’t reciprocate. I’m doing it to a) be friendly and b) make up for all the years I didn’t wave. In other words, I do it for me, not them. Their journey is theirs.

Houston area, I would say maybe 75% of guys wave and maybe 40% of the ladies wave. (Dudes seem to appreciate the 2 door more?) I wave at all Wranglers and Gladiators regardless of trim or build level. We are still a brotherhood and sisterhood, even if we don't agree on everything.

I'm no stranger to Jeeps. My first Jeep was a '89 YJ which I bought in '95. There were a lot less Jeeps on the road back then and everyone waved. Now I drive a 20 JLU Sahara pavement princess. Seems like everyone has a Jeep now and more than 50% don't wave. I kinda get upset that I don't get waves back. So, is there a hierarchy that you guys and girls have employed to who you wave to? Does a Compass or Renegade get a wave? How about a new Grand Wagoneer? Is it just Wranglers? I gotta say I shy away from waving to anything that's not a Wrangler and anything that is bone stock because those drivers just don't understand. Am I crazy?

1989 Wrangler, with an engine from a 1996 4.0 liter with fuel injection; a Ford 9 inch rear axle from a 1979 Lincoln Versailles with disc brakes, Detroit locker and 31 spline axles; Dana 30 front axle with axle disconnect eliminator shafts, bigger u-joints, ARB air locker and hub kits; a NV4500 transmission from a 1997 GMC pickup; a 4:1 transfer case modification; spring over axle conversion with 4" lift springs and 35 x 14.5 Boggers. All built by hand by me!

Sounds like it from some of these guys.

That's why I'll never wave to the douchbag elitist pricks that only take their Jeep out on sunny weekends and I'll never wave to the braindead clueless wanabee mall crawler commuters during the rest of the week. I know I'm the only real hardcore offroad Jeeper accidentally on the road that day and everyone else is a poser wimp, so that covers all my bases, right? ?

All those other car owners hear about the jeep wave and want to be in the club but can't. Alas, "It's just not a JEEP now is it!?"

Depends on circumstances.

At my summer spot every other vehicle is a Jeep so I don't wave, and 90% of others don't either.

Otherwise day to day I wave, but only at Wranglers or CJs of any age / condition etc.

I also don't overthink the whole thing. If I missed waving back, no big deal.

So many people today have different opinions on Jeep etiquette, some people hate ducks, some people love ducks, some people wave and some give you the finger. When I had my YJ I didn’t travel much with it and never knew about the Jeep wave. It wasn’t until I got my JK in 2010 someone mentioned the Jeep wave. So from then on I’d give a casual wave to on coming Jeeps. Some would wave some wouldn’t but one day I met a lifted JKU on big tires covered in mud and as I waved, an arm extended from the door less on comer with an extended middle finger. a similar Jeep was following the first and the same gesture was made. From that day on I usually wait to see if the oncoming Jeep waves first, I stay ready to throw up the two finger salute. Generally, I assume if they are wave friendly they wave in advance to allow time to wave back, if they don’t wave by the time it’s to late for me to wave I figure they either don’t know about Jeep wave or just don’t do it. Sometimes I’ll just toss up the two finger salute for the hell of it, occasionally I do the over exaggerated new Jeep owner wave just because I feel like being a clown. 99.9% of the time I let the oncoming traffic be the instigator, wranglers and gladiators only but that’s only because I generally dont pay attention to other Jeep models, it’s just another vehicle on the road.

As a side note, most of the Jeeps I meet are locals and we all wave to each other anyway. If I am on a forest road or trail I wave to everyone regardless of vehicle because a friendly gesture may pay off someday if I’m in need of assistance.

You can't miss a Ford Escape wave man.......they will chase you down, then you will have some soccer Mom beating the crap out of you on the side of the road.

I had my left arm in a cast and I still got the crap kicked out of me.....Jeep guy just can't match that fury.

Can you turn it around and lower a finger for special occasions?
