I am surprised no one else mentioned this, I was taught that the most important part of warming up a vehicle is not the engine but the transmission. You do this by starting it, putting it in D for a minute and then go. This helps to reduce the stress of the cold on the transmission. I have no idea if this is true but that is what I was taught when I was a kid in Minnesota and I still do it to this day.
