I use Gaia and it works for what I want, meaning it is cheap.
I did some internet searching and it seemed that GAIA was ahead of Onx at this time. There are slight differences so you might want to do more research to see how they work for your needs.

What I like to do is put my route on the map using my computer, then download the maps to my phone. When I'm out in the middle of nowhere with no cell service the maps still work well and if I get 10' off of my route I can see it on the map.

Both map services let you use multiple map layers, some require you to pay more. I'm happy with the basic map for my needs but the other map layers do sound interesting.

I've seen other people running GAIA through their ipads and using a Garmin Inreach Mini for the GPS signal.

I am an Android phone user and wanted to have trail maps available when out Jeepin' so I did some research as well. I found that you can buy an iPad mini with cellular but you do not need to activate or connect any plan with it. I then installed Gaia and upload maps and routes from the computer. When I sign into Gaia on the iPad it will have the maps and routes that I selected from the computer.
You can also send routes from trailsoffroad.com directly to the Gaia app.
Even with no cell signal, the GPS chip in the iPad mini with cellular will be able to locate you on the map and guide you along a selected route or just locate you on the map. Hope this helps.

Off roading newb here and I’ve had good luck with Gaia. I usually download the trail from trailsoffroad and download that map onto my phone. I hope to get an iPad soon in order to have better visibility of the map. Right now I’m using my iPhone 12 and it is kind of small.

OnX Offroad user here. I have an android based tablet with no cellular function which I download maps to using the OnX app.

I have a Garmin InReach which is synched to the tablet via BT. When I bring up the map and turn on the Garmin I have satellite nav with my location shown on the tablet screen.

Hi Andrew, have you tried displaying Gaia from your phone to the UConnect screen using Carplay?

I have done it and it generally works well. However we were out in October and one morning it insisted in showing us near my home 1000 miles away. I had to turn the phone on and off a few times to get it to start behaving.

I was just curious. We do the Gaia/IPhone/Uconnect thing and it has worked great for us.

I have and it works pretty well but I find myself using the off road pages or Sirius radio display up and forget to swap back to Gaia.
