Dissimilar metals is the cause. Fortunately never saw this on my 2020 after 4 years, hoping to keep that luck with the current 22 model.

Dude did us dirty when he sold his Willys and didn’t make a video telling why or even that he sold it at all. My assumption is that it had corrosion and they didn’t want to piss off Allen and Morrison, but now that those two have departed, it’s game on.

Come on Mr. Mica, what’s the scoop? Why no closing video for your Willys? ;-)

My understanding was they were to replace the panels, hood and tailgate if affected.
Yes, but that policy wasn't in place until after my warranty ended

I avoided the 2018's due to new units rusting on dealer lots. Bought a 4runner instead. Eventually bought a 2021 V6. No rust and simplest drive train. The Seattle area 2018's had rust problems.

The 4runner and 2021 JL have both been problem free.

@TFL , we have 3 JL’s with only one showing significant issues so far.
In order of purchase:
2019 JLR in Bikini, 54,000km, hung the full doors on the garage wall 2 years ago after getting half doors painted to match. Half doors were fully painted, meaning paint under where the hinges mount so have a physical barrier. I also installed a 3M film on the back of the hinges to provide a second barrier layer. The half doors have no issues. The full doors had some very minor (3or4, around 1mm in diameter) bubbles right on the hinges. This was dealt with under warranty. It was very minor and I thought about simply ignoring it as it wasn’t getting any worse. The only reason I decided to get it done was because the half door paint match required blending in of the surrounding panels so the full doors would have been “off”. The shop that paint matched the half doors is a Stellantis approved repair shop and had the paint code from the previous job, they used the same technique as before so I hope to have no issues with either set of doors.

2022 4xE Rubicon in Firecracker,24,000km. No issues……..yet.

2018 JLR also in Firecracker, 82,000km. Severe corrosion on the hinges and door edges. Bought the vehicle with 74,500km on it and asked 2 dealers about whether Stellantis would help with a repair as a goodwill gesture given the very low mileage for its year. Was told it was declined because the vehicle was purchased with it. This baffles me as it essentially states, had the original owner been given good service by the dealership they used and the corrosion warranty pointed out and used it would have been fixed with no issues. Because that didn’t happen and a new owner inherited the issue it won’t be.

I would love to obtain an email address for a senior executive at Jeep to ask them to justify their logic on the 2018. I’m not convinced it would change the outcome but wonder if it might result in a directive to the dealer network to put customers somewhere on their priority list and highlight what could be resolved rather than just pretend there’s no issues and leaving customers in their apparent ignorance.

As for all the interesting comments on here I’ll simply say this, sometimes it takes someone with a platform to speak up on behalf of others in order for a manufacturer to listen. If they get a few hits on YT I’m not certain that’s a reason not to have them do it.
I could put something on my channel which, with a whopping 20 subscribers, is definitely not monetized but also doesn’t get seen so what would be the point?
As with all things, your mileage may vary.

I had bubbling around the hinges on all 4 doors of my 2019 Bikini JLUR. It wasn't bad. I would've fixed it, but I traded it in. The bubbling started early on. My current Earl doesn't seem to have any issues.

While I appreciate that you are willing to highlight the corrosion issue some have had on your channel, it might be worth conducting a poll to better understand how wide spread and varied the problem is.

Some on here have had the problem corrected with no return issues, others like Dusty, have experienced significant challenges in having the corrosion issue properly corrected. And then there are more than few of us who haven’t had an issue at all.
FYI, I started a poll on this very issue, 2 years ago. Quit a few have chimed in. But, not enough as far as I am concerned.

Corrosion/Bubbling Paint Thread Poll.

good call. I've had 3 TJ's, 2 JK's, and now 2 JLs. My 2008 JK Sahara got it really quickly (after less than a year old bought new, and taken very good care of). None of the others had any issues (knock on wood).

Some food for thought - the JL's with the galvanic corrosion are hardly the first to experience hinge corrosion problem wide spread on Jeeps. As you are probably aware it goes back to the JK's and certainly even back to the TJ. Only now in 2024 is Jeep addressing it with the new addition of the Zinc shim between the body and hinge. I was really surprised when Jeep released the JL, that it was not properly addressed after it being so evident on the JK.
The zinc shim isn't going to keep the hinge from corroding, it's purpose is to keep the corrosion from spreading from under the hinge to the paint around the hinge

Hi All,

My name is Tommy Mica, I am a producer for a YouTube channel called TFLcar.

Following up on the JL rust concerns. If you have been impacted and want to tell your story let’s do a zoom call for a video! Send me a dm or shoot me an email at [email protected]. Would love to hear your experience.
Thanks!
Hey Tommy,

1. I'm a huge follower of TFL for years and have purchased 4 trucks/Jeeps specifically off of TFL videos. I trust you guys more than most reviewers.
2. I have the rust issue on my 2018 JLUR. It's on my door hinges and on the passenger side of the hood running all the way down.
- It's been in a garage 4 of the 6 years I've owned it and it's crazy to see that much rust in such a new vehicle.
3. I reached out to Jeep about this when it was really showing up after about 3 years and was told that it was basically on me to have replaced.

If this is the rust you're referring to I'd be happy to Zoom and share the experience.

Agreed. @TFL literally mentions being a producer to conduct an interview for a YouTube video. What the fudge nuggets is there to be salty about? If there was no incentive, the internet would be awful. I mean we're tracked and targeted in the background all the time for ads, content, etc - so someone, somewhere (probably in China) can make money. TFL is up front what they're doing and that's a huge problem? Really?

Home - The Fast Lane Truck (tfltruck.com) makes very well produced content which takes time and money. I'm subscribed to their channel, does that make me evil too?
It’s jealousy.
