Installing the factory remote start is exactly the same as if ordering it from their factory. It's a stand alone install (does not need any other options such as the proximity locks or anything). All the features of any Jeep, factory ordered w/Rem Start. To clarify, remote start is actually built into the vehicle. The part you replace is actually the RF Hub (which is why this has to be dealer programmed to the body computer...and that's a 20 min job for them). This is a much easier and cleaner install then any 3rd party install and you get 2 new key fobs, which include keys cut specifically to your vehicle (they need the VIN to order the kit so they can cut the keys to match and they program your old FOBs as well, so you end up with 4 FOBs). The RF Hub is located in the left rear of the vehicle and takes no more than 3 min to swap out (small box held with two 10mm bolts and one electrical connector). My dealer (who is just average) swapped the box and programmed for $99 and it integrates just the same as my '22 Rubi (with factory rem start). Locks the doors before starting, turns on the A/C or heater depending on the temp, and will shut off in 10 min if not "officially" put into RUN. It's a no brainer.
It sounds like the OEM retrofit and the Start-X are the same with three exceptions:
  1. There is a difference in price.
  2. Start-X doesn't require a dealer visit
  3. The OEM solution looks....more OEM, but it's OEMness is hidden behind the dash.
Looks like either way is a good solution depending on the weight you put on the three differences.

You're correct, but you forgot the 2 new Jeep Key Fobs that come with the OEM box. And the operation is the same as described in the owners manual too. (and the heater or A/C will come on automatically, even if set to OFF.)

Dumb question: How does the heater/AC come on if it's set to "off". Said another way, if the climate controls are set to off, how does the Jeep know if it's being remote-started in Alaska (heater) or Arizona (AC)? Or...it's a temperate day, and I don't want any sort of heating/cooling, how does it know to remain off?

The Start-X only knows to continue on at the climate levels that were in place when you last shut the Jeep down. [which actually works fine for the intended purpose]

I've installed remote starts on recent gen manual Volkswagens when they said it couldn't be done. Used a very similar 3x lock with the OEM fob.
I haven't done the JL, but I believe grounding the clutch switch will allow you to do it. On the previous units I've used, there was a 'grounded when locked' output that I used to spoof pressing the clutch. Of course no one on Amazon has tried it, it requires an extra step and if you leave it in gear it could take off on you. I've thought about installing one but I'm happy to be able to do pit stop mode from the factory (leave it running, walk away and lock it with the fob).
Manuals should always be parked in gear.

The factory built in sensors. Jeep has cabin humidity, cabin inside temp and outside ambient temp sensors that the factory rem start uses to adjust cabin temp when the vehicle is started, even if it's set to off (either cool it off in AZ or turn on heat if in AK!). Now when you get in the Jeep and press the run button, YOUR settings take over, so if you had the climate set to off, the fan and everything will immediately shut off (and if you had it set to A/C or heat, those settings will take over). Also, if you have seat heat, if ambient is below 40 degrees, the seat heaters will come on too! That's an awesome feature! In addition, around 32 degrees will also turn on rear window defroster and front window defrosters too. So you get a lot more automatic features with the factory system.
When I lived in the Midwest, being able to remote start the car before leaving work on a snowy day, knowing that the heaters & defrosters would come on automatically, I could stay in inside for 5 or 10 min then go out, and the windows would be clearing and seats warm. Pretty cool.
