We have no access to that data. So we’re all guessing. I guess zero.

I doubt there's a publicly known number. I'm not sure what you are considering an engine failure. Are you including repairable engine component failures? I'm aware of some rocker arm bearing failures that resulted in rocker arm replacement and not an engine failure beyond repair. I think some of those did result in cam damage and replacement too.

To me engine failure is catastrophic damage that's beyond repair or less serious damage requiring an engine be disassembled to its components in order to be rebuilt.

I'm very confident that my 3.6 V6 will be running just fine long after my doors have holes corroded through at the hinges.

Locally talked with someone with an early build 3.6l JL with problems. Something wasn't tightened in the valve train. Factory defect.

I bought the 3 .6l for its reliability. At the time most local inventory was the 4cyl turbo.

Understand this thing is also in most other Mopars, challenger GT being one of them, cop cars another. Ram 1500 even, darn peppy as well, empty, level. Motortrend or other mag would be pounding it if bad.

626,000 mile example:

Do NOT go cheap on quality oil, and DO NOT extend the oil life to maximum recommended, I always change between 4-6000 miles.

I survived the 2013 debacle with no issue other than lemoning it because the 12 times it was to dealer first 9 months, only due to front dress noise. Pulleys, water pump, PS, AC, etc. I figure they did $12,000 in warranty when I said enough. I learned again, never buy the first year of production of anything. MAX 737 ring a bell?

My 2016 JKU 75th Anniversary at 55k miles looks to have developed an oil leak, luckily I have Powertrain Coverage up until 4/2024 via Certified Pre Owned purchase which is 7 year/100000 miles. I took it to my local mechanic who said it looks to be the main seal, not the typical oil cooler issue, he did not touch after I found out I still have coverage.

this recent cold blast seems to have disabled the “most capable vehicle ever”, with the failure of the TStat housing and a week later this leak, and throughout its history a new radiator at 22k miles, failed rear axle seal at 40k, failed front calipers at 35k, on a vehicle that I baby with only Pennzoil synthetic oil changes, never beyond 5K miles, 1/2 recommended interval fluid changes (diffs, Xfer case changed every 15k miles, only Mopar fluids), 2 quarts of ONLY Mopar ATF+4 swapped every oil change, and never taken off pavement. It’s truly an embarrassment. A Toyota is barely broken in at 55k miles, but FCA GARBAGE ? Ready for the trash heap. My ”weak” Mazda CX-5 Unaffected from the same cold snap.

Yeah, the Ford Bronco a recent example, the 2.7 6 cylinder motors blowing up at 1000 mileS, Holy crap, if I could get a 2006 with low mileage and a 4.0, I would jump on it, assuming the frame not rotted out.

I tried, local guy wanted $10,000 for a rotting frame 4.0 with 250,000 miles on it. Sorry bub.

October we were down to Gatlinburg and took 1 of those Pink Jeep Tours. I was talking with our guide about how good the fleet does and he stated they routinely get 250,000 miles from the JK 3.6 fleet.

The Jeep for our tour was built up to haul about 10 people and had very oversized tires and 8 bolt axles so probably 1 ton axles. Each Jeep probably averages 4 tours per day hauling people around for about 2 hours and finishes up in a private off-road park on each tour. The Jeep is typically driven like its stolen as well.

Here is a pic of the Jeep we were in. For reference my wife is 5 foot

So there was a pretty significant upgrade in 2016, FCA released an updated version of the 3.6 L engine. This engine now features upgrades to the variable valve timing (VVT) system, two-stage variable valve lift (VVL), a new intake manifold, new valve springs, new piston rings, new fuel injectors, new ignition coils, a cooled EGR, lower internal friction and lower weight. It also features a higher compression ratio, increased from 10.2:1 to 11.3:1.

I haven't heard of too many issues with the '16+ models other than the occasional lemon.

Yeah a buddy of mine wanted to buy an older jeep. I told him to look at the TJ's with the 4L. He couldn't find one that wasn't completely rusting apart listed for less than the original MSRP when new...

If you say so. Feel better?
Just a little but really I would feel best if my 2.0 wouldn’t be such a concern. But the V6 just doesn’t have enough power and torque comparatively for the times we live in.

I agree.. it took a 5.13 gear upgrade for mine to be acceptable with what I do. The manual trans also helps keep it in the powerband.

I'm watching the new Tacoma TRD Pro's closely and the new Chevrolet ZR2 with the 2.7l turbo 4 if stellantis doesn't announce the hurricane engine and a release date. I'm really waiting on this thing but wouldn't want the first model year so I'll prob keep my current jeep until 2025 or so.

Cars That Will Get The New Stellantis Inline-Six Hurricane Engine. We expect to start seeing the new Stellantis twin-turbocharged 3.0L inline-six Hurricane engine in the guts of Stellantis brands, especially the Jeep Wrangler and the Dodge Charger from the 2023 model year onward

This is really what steered me towards the NA 3.6 vs the turbo. The 3.6 starts making torque sooner (and smoother onset) and makes power at a higher rpm.

You get that little turbo push and 50 more ft lbs of torque between 3-5krpm but there is a tradeoff...gears also help with that.

Of course the 4XE is another animal altogether :)

Just wondering how many 3.6l engine failures.. noises notwithstanding.

I'm under the impression this is the most bulletproof engine fca/stellantis has ever made.
I think a good tune up shop that fix that engine.

Bulletproof engine. Jeep TJ straight 6 about as bulletproof as you will find. I have worked on them with over 300k mi and the only issue is a couple of sensors, cheap $ Cam Sensor and there is another on the distributor IIRC, there are about 2 that will begin to fail at 150k mi based upon my experience.
