Passenger side thrust washer in my D35 exploded. Any idea what could have caused this? See pictures. (Scratches on spider gears are from me.)

More importantly is there anything I can do/be concerned about right now? Every kit I see for sale online is backordered to Christmas.

For some context I was playing around off-road and when I hosted off the jeep I saw that the rear diff breather had torn when I was out. I pulled the cover immediately to change axle fluid and pieces of the thrust washer dropped along with my stomach. No noise, event, or indication of this happening when I was driving. Is it possible this happened a while ago?

On a related note anyone have an old D35 or D44 lying around up here in the northeast? ?

Sorry. Miserable.

The D35 in my TJ blew up at about 40,000 miles, but I was running larger tires (33s). I replaced it with a 8.8 out of an old Ford Explored and used the opportunity to regear to 456s. It was a great upgrade.

I would use this as an opportunity to replace the D35 with a stronger rear-end. What have you shopped, and have you considered swapping out whole axel&rear end assemblies?

I have absolutely shopped around for replacement assemblies. I've been waiting for a good opportunity to snag a set of Rubicon axles for a little bit now.

There is no way to buy the thrust washer by itself. It comes with the spider gears as a kit. There is the OEM and the Crown auto kit but I can't find either in stock anywhere. Trac Lok kits require 3.73 or higher. A locker would be a pointless investment. I am absolutely open to snagging a narrow D44 as a nice upgrade but I still need to source one.

Yeah... I have 33s on my jeep too...

Start checking LKQ and other similar wrecking yard companies. Everything is drying up fast, quality parts are out of stock first. I just had hell finding 4 quality rotors and pads for my F150, which I ordered last night.

Everyone, take care of what you have right now. the "supply line issue do to Covid" is really an international trade war, which just got worse with the Ukraine/Russia war. This will all pass eventually, but it will be hard to get anything better than low end disposable parts in the near future. Just look and see how much is already out of stock.

A little off topic, but is it a smart idea to automatically chose the LSD even if you don't need it, just to get the D44? It's a $700 option and seems like a no brainer, and I don't even know anything about off-roading.

Just to clarify:
You like to wheel hard.
You decided against the Willys package.
You're running a D35 in the rear on 33s.
Your gear ratio is below a 3.73.

Dude, you seriously need to upgrade axles!

There are plenty of folks upgrading JL and JLU Rubicons to aftermarket Dana 60s. Things are still a bit messed up with labor shortages and supply chain issues; but, since this is when your axle happened to give up, now might be the time to contact a builder shop, Rebel, Trail Jeeps, Poly, or whoever, and see if they have a pair of lightly used Rubicon axles for a reasonable price.

Repairing your existing axles, which have already proven themselves to be a bit light for what you apparently can't resist doing, might just be kicking the same can down the same road.

How did this happen? Were you playing in mud?. I doubt this has much to do with 33s and more to do with what you were doing. Everyone jumping the gun on the JL d35 too soon. This was not an outcome of slow and careful crawling or even trying to get through a rock with some momentum. More context? Looks like you were having a bit too much fun lol. I bet you hit something at speed.

Regardless. The sport d44 sell for cheap if you dont want to pony up for rubi locked axles.

But seeing what you did to a d35 on 33s and open diff I would suggest you go for an ultimate d44 at least if you wanna keep doing whatever you were doing to have this happen.
