1) Seems that the &$%& nozzle provided with the DEF box has a 50% chance of dribbling down the side of the Jeep or on your feet. To cure that, go down to your local ACE hardware store and buy an o-ring that will fit in the grove in the cap of the nozzle ... Industry #124 down in the right lower corner. Actually, buy two.

Install that in your nozzle and you can pour the DEF drip free.

2) Grab a clean nozzle and install that second o-ring in it. Now save that nozzle for pouring windshield washer fluid in the difficult to fill reservoir. Yep, it fits the standard gallon jug perfectly.

3) If you change your own oil, that empty DEF box becomes extremely valuable. I bought and installed a ValvoMax quick twist oil drain plug ... other brands are available. Slide the DEF box under your Jeep and insert the drain hose in the box to drain 9 qts of messy oil into the 10 qt box. I've drained 180 degree oil into the box with no problems ... that's about as hot as you can stand it to work the quick drain mechanism. Recap the box and take it down to your local O'Reilly's store for disposal. No splashing into the skid plate or out of the drain pan ... in fact, not a drop will go astray.

I let the oil drain a long time with this set up. That helps let the filter cool off, as well as, drain the oil out of the filter. Removing the filter without drips is the last problem to work out. Right now I place a disposable rag under the filter housing and simply let it soak up any drips.

very nice...thanks for the DEF box suggestion for waste oil. I have a Fumoto oil valve with drain hose for ease of oil changes. As for the oil filter, if you bust it loose first thing on your oil change and let it drip for 20 min or so almost nothing comes out as it has drained back down into the crankcase. I still keep a 1 gal freezer baggie next to the filter and once unthreaded I quickly drop it into the baggie...and I keep a shop rag below the filter just in case...

I'd rather just get rid of the Box

It's so much easier (and significantly cheaper ... and no box) to go to a truck stop and fill up at the pump.
when I'm feelin' cute sometimes I just go to the fuel island at our shop and get DEF from our 3k gal bulk tank...

I'd need to be wearing a skirt or something similar to feel cute. I'm not sure I'm up for that right now!

I have a problem here because A) the closest def pump is nearly 20 miles from me, and B) I’ve done this multiple times, I don’t get as many miles between fill ups from the pump as I do with the box.

Mine is 13 miles away. I just have to remember to fill up when I'm getting low and in that area.

I stupidly neglected to do that this go around though and ended up spending $30 on a damn 2.5 gallon box yesterday. I found out the warnings get stupidly insistent when you get below 100 miles!

I'm not sure how that's possible. They're both standardized under ISO 22241, which is 32.5% automotive-grade urea and 67.5% deionized water. Truck stops have a higher turnover, meaning the DEF is usually fresher and hasn't been sitting on a warehouse / store shelf for months.

That is, as long as you're filling up from a truck stop that sees decent volume, the DEF should be quite a bit better than what comes in a box.

One would think they would be the same, but it’s been consistently different with each method. I just make it a point to grab a box every time we do a Costco run, they’re usually $13-16 dollars a box there. I probably have one or two in the garage at all times. I’m sure Costco is just like the gas stations, I highly doubt the boxes are sitting around very long before being sold.

How much def are you running through. I drive quite a bit but I’m only adding def every month or so. I fill up after I get the 500 mile start up warning next truck stop I’m at. I tend to use the same truck stops around the state due to my fuel discount.

My usage has been running at a steady 750 to 800 miles per gallon ... ~2000 miles per 2.5 gallon box. I use the boxes because my local Tractor Supply sells it at a reasonable price, so there is a good turnover in the product ... I check the manufacturer code. When heading out on a trip, I check all of the fluids and top off the DEF from a box that has been stored in an air conditioned room ... it's hot our here in Arizona.
