Update:

On the drive home it was 8 degrees warmer and there was a noticeable change in the ride; so chalk it up to cold weather makes the shocks ride harsher? ?‍♂

Shock performance shouldn’t be affected that much by a change in temperature of a few degrees.

I still believe you got a defective shock absorber.

It’s not unheard of for a shock to get damaged during transport. Look underneath and see if there are any signs of leakage or damaged bushings.

I did do a cursory check prior to driving home and everything looked ok. Will jack it up this weekend and give the suspension a more thorough look.

Also, check you radius arm bushings and any other suspension parts for looseness or damage. If you find any, mark it with a silver sharpie or paint pen so the tech at the dealer will see what you saw.
