I‘ve always thought the bare fiberglass hard top interior was cheap and unfinished looking. Has anyone here painted their hard top interior? Positives, negatives, regrets, etc? I searched for threads on this but didn’t find anything.

I’m considering either straight spray paint or plastidip. My concern with plastidip is the apparent skill required when masking off windows, hardware, etc. Seems like you need to spray heavily and then immediately remove the masking so it doesn’t dry and adhere to the masked off areas? On the positive side I understand that if I really screw this up it’ll just peel off. Any advice on this welcome.

If you’ve painted your hard top‘s interior I’d love to see photos, get suggestions, etc.

If you think the JL hardtop looks cheap and unrefined, you should look the the CJ, YJ, and TJ hardtops :CWL:

I plastidipped the freedom panels. I didn’t do much prep other than wiping them down with water and dish soap. I used the standard black and it matches the interior pretty well. I covered the middle of the panels with a cheap headliner of Amazon. For the back I just used the headliner. Like you said, the edges with tape are what get you with plastidip. Luckily you don’t have to tape off much on the freedom panels.

Just grab one of the headliner kits. I don't have one so can't make a recommendation, but there are plenty of threads here going over the different options.

I’ve got the headliner and a black sun shade and I can’t see it anymore, the cabin is quieter/cooler, and I’ve got a sun shade when the top is off

win/win/win

Pic at extreme angle will show the small transparency, but for the most part it goes away and just looks black

If you look on the JT site, I'm pretty sure one of the guys there painted his with a good write-up.

I did my JK and added the hotheads, pretty easy. Tape off and clean with alcohol to get any oils off and dirt then remove the hardware and spray. I used black chalckboard (rustoleum I believe)which gave it a flat look which I loved. Have not done the JL yet but will when I have a minute or two...

Also painted mine with spray paint. Looks great, and was cheap and easy. Def worthwhile.
