Alrighty, the dash says I need an oil filter and fresh oil. Local store has 3 brand options A-Premium is the cheapest, Purolators in the middle, and KandN tops out at the top. Now, right now it's got an A-Premium, and that's because when I got it thats what was in it, and I never bothered to question why or if it was worth it to pay more. So what say you? And while I'm at it im using Penzoil 0w-20, I'm assuming that's fine? Or is there a better oil manufacturer out there in that weight?

never really paid attention to oil brands or filter brands as up till now my cars were definitely of the "pay the least you can" variety, but this is my first decent vehicle, and I'd like to see it get up to the 300k mark on the OD (kilometres not miles), so I figure I had better start paying more attention.

I've been using k&N for all of my vehicles for the last 10 years without issue.

Honestly at the end of the day if you're changing your oil every 5,000 mi, you can use the cheapest crappiest oil filters and it'll do just fine.

The only time quality of oil filters matters, is if you're running it for like 20,000 or 30,000 mi between oil changes.

So in that sense I would recommend going for lower cost and not worry about whether the quality is there or not. As long as it's filtering down to the recommended microns by the factory manual, you should be fine no matter what the brand is.

I worked in design and development at a filter company for about 5 years. I only use OE brand filters. My daughters 2011 Fit still gets honda filters. Of course honda is a bit different as every modern honda takes the same filter except the S2k.

Oil is a bit different as there are industry standards/ratings. I use only mobil1 but penzoil is fine.

Now oil weight....oh boy that is a hot topic around here. The guy from engineering explained on YouTube did a decent video to watch.

I’ve always been big on using OEM filters. The last two oil changes I’ve used the Mobil 1 oil filter to go with the Mobil 1 oil I’ve used for many years because the store where I bought the oil didn’t have a Mopar filter. The difference between a Mopar filter and a Mobil 1 or other filter like Wix is about $2, which is about how much the sales tax is on your oil and filter. All of them will do a respectable job if you keep the oil changed regularly or changed sooner if you run in abnormally dusty dirty conditions.

The filter industry is very inbred. We made filters/branded them for our competitors and also bought from them to complete our offering of low volume applications. Generally a manufacturer will specialize in certain size/type filters. But for high volume filters (think the 3.6) everyone makes their own simply for the margins. If you look at the link attached above that shows the sectioned filters which may or definitely are not be made by the same manufacturer

That used to be the Wix XP. Somewhere I read that NAPA no longer sources from Wix. I was looking at other parts like thermostats and a few other parts for the Jeep. Found that all of it was Chinese. Not shopping there anymore. Not that I was ever a regular customer there.

Here's a clip from Royalty Auto.
Essential Tips for Choosing the Right Oil Filter | TikTok

I was a long time Wix XP oil filter customer. But I recently went to the Fram Ultra. The Wix filter has excellent construction. But the filter media in the Fram is quite a bit better in terms of filtration size.
