So I bought a dash cam (Aukey 4K) that came with a USB to Mini USB cable. I plug it into the Jeep's USB port and it works beautifully.

However, when I cut that cable and connect the black/red wires directly to a 12V source, the camera doesn't power up. I tried the mirror power, the HomeLink power, the AUX power under the hood, and a 12V/100W power adaptor. Nothing. But... when I reconnect it back to the USB cable plugged into the USB port, it powers right up.

So I ran into this, another option is to get one of these

https://www.amazon.com/Novosonics-C...SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=12v+hardwire+socket

Many similar on ebay/amazon

I did not want to cut the cord on the 12v plug that came with dash cam, as it also steps down voltage from 12v to 5v. Soldered this adapter to Aux 1 and ground, plugged in dash cam, used some electrical tape to secure plug to socket (in case came apart by vibrating) neatly tucked behind pass cowl trim, ran cord behind windshield trim to dash cam
