Update on having the Jeep in for wind noise:

I took it in 4/24/18, and the staff there seemed to downplay the wind noise issue, saying my hardtop was probably not adjusted right. I explained to them all the posts in this forum, yet they still had a sort of lackadaisical attitude about it.

About 1pm in the afternoon, I received a call from a Jeep Care consultant in Michigan, and he was very interested in the issue and genuinely showed concern over how the dealer was handling it. He explained that there have been multiple complaints of generalized excessive wind noise, and how even though Jeeps are off road and gritty vehicles, they are designed with premium quality and should not have so much noise.

He then called my Jeep dealer, and when I went and picked my Jeep up, their tone had changed. They explained to me that they were going to start a ā€œStar reportā€ and an engineer would look into the issue since there has been so many reports. I’m assuming they are essentially in the early stages of a recall fix of some sort and they are amassing info until they can find a consistent solution. He said they weren’t sure if the gasket around the front window may be the issue and if so, they would probably have to manufacture new replacements and then switch them out.

The dealer said once he was recontacted by the Jeep engineer, they would bring my vehicle back in. Also, everyone that is in the Jeep Wave program has a complimentary rental while your Jeep is in the shop.

So hopefully this is the beginning of the solution! I’m optimistic! I still love the JL, but I’ll love it even more with less wind noise!
I'm glad to hear it seems the proper teams were able to get in contact with your dealer. We would like to check in and make sure that your dealer reached out to the suggested resources to look into this further.

I also have the whistling sound that others have described - noticed that the corners of the seal around my windshield aren't quite flush with the frame, as described in some other posts. My hard top is significantly louder than another JL with a premium soft top, and louder than my previous JK w/ hard top. PM sent to @JeepCares yesterday. Hopefully will get some resolution soon - the whistling drives me crazy!

I just drove all 3 models of the JLU Wranglers on city streets and mountain driving here in Denver.

When in the mountains at 65 mph and some cross wind, I had quite a bit of wind noise. Sounded like it was coming from the top of the windshield/hardtop seal.

The Sport S was the loudest, while the Sahara and the Rubicon were only somewhat quieter. None had the top liner installed, which I think is odd since CO temps vary from -30 to 100 deg. F during the year from the high plains to the mountains. I know, I've lived here for over 26 years.

You lucky few who are driving your own ( I'm waiting for the 2 dr ), what is your experience?
First time owner of a Jeep. My JL Sahara is noisy but I thought because its a jeep. If there is a way to travel quieter would be awesome.

I recently took delivery of my new JLU with a hardtop and unfortunately I have the same issue.
Whistling noise above 40 mph that gets louder at highway speeds. It makes longer distance driving tiring.

Julie, should I contact my dealer first or should I send you my vin and dealer info to you first?

Hey guys, I just wanted to give an update on my situation. JeepCares reached out to me and put me in contact with someone at Chrysler. I did not think that I would have to reach out to them after the dealer attempted the second repair. They called in a glass guy and he put a bead of caulk on the inside of the windshield.

The dealer told me that I could drive the Jeep home with a wet bead of caulk on the inside of the dash. Once I got up to 50+ mph on the highway the caulk line lifted and folded over onto my dash. On arriving home I inspected the botched job. The glass guy did not even run the bead of caulk the width of the windshield. It stopped half way. This did not make sense. The windshield folds down making it for an easy job, but I guess he was in a hurry or something.

Even so, I was not impressed, my 52K new JL having an exposed bead of caulk that I had to look at every time I drove it down the road. Rubbish!

I followed up with Chrysler and let them know of the situation. They immediately put me in a rental and had me return my Jeep back to the dealer. The fun part is the dealer has never experienced someone from Chrysler reaching out to them like Chrysler has. The dealer is in total awe right now. Despite having Chrysler supervise the repairs, I informed the dealer that they WILL remove all the caulk that folded onto the dash and from the windshield.

So, Chrysler is having engineering remotely diagnose the issue with the dealer.

To make the situation even more fun and interesting the rental I have is a 2017 Dodge Caravan. My wife really likes it and is asking if she can have a new one. We will see how well this situation is resolved first.

Maybe that was FCAs plan all along. The old bait and switch, they're going to end up selling you two cars!

I'm sure it's been mentioned before in this thread but I installed a Hotheads Headliner in my JLUR and it is amazing! Added the Sound Assassin strips and it is way less noisy on the highway and feels almost like a car in city driving.

I plan on doing the same thing, hotheads and sound assassin strips. Were you happy with how everything fit? Did the strips fit the grooves perfectly? I've been considering putting the sound assassin strips in, then a layer of dynamat, and last the hotheads but that might be overkill?

The dynamat would definitely be overkill. The guys at Hotheads Headliner do a great job with fit and finish so you would likely cause their product to not fit. Everything for me fit together great and was easy to put in. I took my time with it and it took me about two hours to install with the Sound Assassin strips. Completely changes the look and feel of the interior. Costs a bit of coin but I'm definitely glad I got it.

Got my jeep back from dealer...said they drove another jl and it sounded the same. ...doesn't mean a high pitch whistle is ok. Going to try talking with the Chrysler advocate guy again...figure bbn out what my options are. This is a total pain.

Did it reduce the wind noise on the freeway or just general noise reduction?

This thread is about hard top wind noise at highway speeds so curious to know if that made the hard top wind noise substantially less..

What dealership did you buy at? Did you take it back to the same dealership to have them look at it?

Wind noise is substantially reduced on the freeway. Mind you it is still a Jeep and is noisy by comparison but I have seen a noticeable difference.

Hi mysterywrasse,
You can send us a message with your VIN, phone number and current mileage now. From there we can get started on opening a case. Just let us know as well as soon as you have an appointment made.
