I paid my dues with the prior Bronco, JK/JL's lifts, bumpers, winch, etc. Now,. If I have any vehicle under warranty, it goes to dealer for anything, period. Proof of oil change? It's in your computer Mr Service guy.

My 10 year old 335 goes to an indy, great folks, not cheap, but for less than I can buy the expensive oil, they do the whole thing. While I do something else.

The man who taught me how to fix vehicles still owns and operates his Indy garage at 80 years old. I also credit him for cultivating my OCD for perfection.

Because of that OCD and my confidence in my abilities, I will never hand over the keys. My vehicles dont go back to dealerships while I own them.

My opinion of dealership “parts replacers” is extremely low…..

In fact my workload has been increasing with age. My kids are not quite driving age yet, but my nieces and nephews (along with their parents..) vehicles come to my shop for work. My oldest will be inheriting a 2015 JK from my father in law.

The complete oil change, at an expensive shop no less, costs less than purchasing the oil itself? Or did I misread this? Wouldn't synthetic oil (five quarts?) cost less than $30?

I worked on my own vehicles for decades and absolutely loved it. But after a few injuries and just getting older, the creaks and pains took longer to heal up from, so I mostly let the experts work on my vehicles nowadays. I still try to do most bolt on type of projects myself, but the stuff that really keeps you under a vehicles for hours at a time or contorts your body into a pretzel...those types of things I either just don't do anymore or have it done for a few bucks.

Check out the Oil Udder.
Interesting idea. Wouldn't the filter need to be hanging down? Mine is upside down.

Thanks! I'm always chasing the fabled white-glove oil change. :)

Can anyone recommend good online courses for automobile maintenance?
YouTube. I’m not being sarcastic either. There are all sorts of experienced machiners, mechanics and technicians on YT that offer free videos on how to do things. Like I literally saw this one guy fix a block with warped heads. He machined them and put the vid on YT. I was blown away. ?

I hear ya bud, unfortunately do to my job I m already prematurely beat to shit lol 3 shoulder surgeries 1 elbow and 1 knee so I find myself (at 47) having to hand off things I never would consider in the past which is pretty infuriating to me but I have to watch what I do because I need to make it another 15 years at work
Get massages (monthly if possible) and do yoga/vinyasas (weekly). This may help with your injuries and the pain resulting from them.

You can do 15yrs more! If you try to add these things in it’ll help get you there.

If you aint a fan of massages, go with wifey/gf/partner or a homeboi. Lots of athletes and gym rats get monthly massages.

You can do vinyasa yoga in the privacy of your own home. There are YT vids…Shiva Rea is my favorite ??

A bit more than $30…if you buy each quart it can be expensive. If you buy in bulk (like the 5 qt bottle) it’s considerably cheaper, for the 3.6L.

My issues are with the salt road conditions that just rust everything in sight of the spray. The older the vehicle gets the worse it is. My wife’s 2010 Dodge Journey is NOT a pleasant car to work on for sure after so many years on the roads in NY State. For the most part, I really look things over, double check the tool supply and then make the decision to either do it myself or take it to one or two of the places I trust locally.

Of course my New to me Jeep was a Florida vehicle for its first 2 years and it showed it. Thankfully I sprayed the ares that I knew might be problems down the road with fluid film. In the spring I’ll get it hosed down and as clean as I can and see what areas might need more protection.

I really try and do things these days so it makes it easier to work on my vehicle. But the one vehicle that may get traded way before the jeep is the 2020 Outback, and for the most part the Dealership that I used to work for get’s that one so I can get a little more due to Certified Pre-Owned status.

But YES! After so many years of maintaining my cars and trucks, my body is telling me I have to slow down. I’ve had enough issues with my hands, shoulders and knees and the arthritis that is rearing its head. 66 years young and I want to be driving my Jeep well into my 80’s!
You! My friend, need to move to TN! ??

hmm… there are many reputable places that offer massage “subscriptions”. So like…if you go monthly, you can receive major discounts. They often have special deals too, where you can get massages at $70/hr or less.

Also, if you have a gym membership, some of them have “spas” and you can get a discounted massage there too.

The gym membership I have is with Lifetime. They have a spa and it’s perfect if you work out regularly and then pop in to get your massage. They also offer discounts for members.

Yes, it can be expensive…but it’s care for you and your body and your mind. Nothing else is much more important tbh. If it’s more than you’d want to spend I’d recommend you looking at your expenses, eliminating something that isn’t really necessary for one month and add that expense to your massages.

Then you can sort it as you see fit. ?

As far as Vinyasa Yoga…it’s not like regular yoga like breathing and beingin one spot. Vinyasas offer movement and balance. So like if you do downward dog, cobra, plank to warrior pose…these moves are continuous that you do in a circle (changing directions). It benefits the body by giving you a cardio and strength training workout simultaneously. You will perspire A LOT, and you will need to rely on your yoga breathing as you do the movements. It is the best yoga experience imo bc you get fullbody benefits in different ways.

ok…sorry for the rambling. I just hope the information will help others as these changes have helped me. ??

Yeah I’m a serious introvert lol I don’t do gyms can’t stand to be around that many people at once, I’ll talk to the person I know they’re gonna get back to me tomorrow see about the “subscription” deal. Having worked like a dog since I was 12-13 I can’t stand to piss money away so yeah $100 a month would just give me a stroke Lol I’d just suck up the pain

Jeez! This thread is making me feel old ?
But, at 61, I can relate to a lot of these aches & pains. Getting old is not for the faint of heart!
I do all my own servicing on the Jeep and truck, with the exception of the wife's X5.
Daily stretching and trips to the gym several times a week really help. Was an industrial controls electrician, so was always active. I think that was a big plus for me physically.
I use a Ranger (BendPak) QuickJack to get the Jeep a ways off the floor.... but man! A two post lift is calling! ?

5 qt. jugs of synthetic automotive oils -- Castrol Edge, Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum -- are and have been averaging $38 at the chains where I purchase my DIY supplies (Advance Auto, etc.) Royal Purple is a bit higher, $43ish.

And don't get me started on the price of motorcycle oil... Here's just one example. Note that that's the price for a single quart. ?
