Well you have repair and then I would want a big check for depreciation of my Jeep on top! So maybe work out for you.
There's no depreciation on a total. It's a total.

I know you hate Farmers, but it may be in your state statute that vehicles that have damage to replace a frame are a total loss, but maybe not.

Typically, there is some negotiation between the body shop and the insurer, or at least some common agreement on what it takes to fix it, and that changes during the repair process. If the insurance company has written an estimate for much less than the value, it probably means the expectation is a large supplement, that there is very likely additional damage that cannot be seen, but can be expected. What that means is you can see the frame ends, as an example, but that there are indicators the damage is not limited to the frame ends. Also, if it were the frame ends, it would almost certainly be repairable, because it is also very likely those parts can be repaired/replaced. It's a very common repair on most vehicles, which means it's likely not limited to frame ends or easily repaired/replaced parts.

A frame repair/replace is pretty straight-forward. What might not be is the fan being pushed into the radiator, or the transmission/transfer case leaking because they were pushed into the engine/driveline. Or the transmission not wanting to go into gear and no one knows why, etc.

I will say that there is almost never an "estimate" written, by an insurance carrier or body shop, that doesn't require a supplement. So, if you have a $25,000 estimate, it's very common to expect a $4,000 supplement. Add cost of rental into that at $40/day for eight weeks and you have another $2,500 the creeps up into total loss territory. If you want to save it, tell them you don't want a rental, tell them you'd like to cash-out based on the initial estimate and sign a release for any/all damages known and unknown and use the money to fix it as much as you can; otherwise, yeah, it's a total and will have a salvaged title if you buy it back.

You may be right. I've never heard of that occurring on a total loss, but since insurance is state-specific, maybe some states have a standard calculation for depreciation. My point is it's a total loss, so there isn't an accounting of how much the value changes since it's considered a "salvaged" title and you accept that when you buy it back...so it would only apply to a vehicle that is considered repairable...but, again, I may not be taking into account how some other state handles it. It's just not something that's been done where I've worked, and I've never heard of that as part of the total loss process. Thanks for pointing that out, keeping me honest. Your state may be different.

Rental typically only lasts until you receive payment. At that point, you're not "owed" anything since you've been fully compensated for the loss. I would do as many online searches of vehicles the same year (or one year newer), similarly equipped, with similar mileage that you can to support a value. It may also allow you to better understand what the true value is, as many people think their vehicle is worth more than it actually is.

Be warned, order banks are closing up on a lot of trims & options. Might be worth looking for a unit on a lot somewhere. Lead time on existing orders ranges from 60 days to 120 days (in my case for an XR pkg Rubicon).

good luck!!

Turn of events, now they are likely just replacing that front 18” of the frame that can easily be replaced. Tomorrow the frame gets 3D scanned to ensure the rest is in spec then it’ll get repaired.

The girl that ran the stop sign had the minimum insurance in Texas so it only covers $25k in property damage. Thank goodness I have underinsured policy in case they did total it out. I can’t believe the min is still that low, kinda crazy considering the price of cars now.

Florida is even worse, it’s $10,000 property and $10,000 medical. My guess, anyone running around with that is someone who can barely afford insurance and their car is one step above bus pass. Their income is probably low enough to judgement proof, so little chance of recovery. I always advise people to have uninsured and underinsured coverage; then it’s the insurance companies problem for recovery.

Damn I need to make sure I have underinsured but wouldn't your insurance still be on the line also? I think I was a bit paranoid and went 75/150k on my regular stuff.
