Just had a chip filled in and overheard the tech on the security cam say Gorilla Glass is a waste of money. 😂
A good friend is a manager at Safelite and he said its a waste. He said we get just as many with Gorilla Glass than without, if its going to crack it will with or without Gorilla

your good friend is missing the point (as many people do); GG isn't about fewer cracks, it's about making it less likely that something will come *through* the windshield.

there's also the fact that it's lighter, but most people don't seem to care much about that.

Everyone has a different story on GG and replacement. Here is mine. Upon delivery of my 22 JLR the dealer (salesman) during the walk around pointed out a couple scratches that I would not have seen until just the right lighting. Said and did replace the windshield on their (dealer/manufacturer) dime. Had me go to their local shop to do so.

Within a year, I had a large rock hit hard on a several hundred mile road trip. It grew across a third of the windshield at least a 1/3 across. The dealer sent me to the same shop. Replaced again with GG. Said next time it is on me. I have a $100 deductible specific to windshield replacement so I will use that next time. Shit happens… and a lot with an upright windshield. It is what it is. BTW… these days, a $100 deductible is well worth putting in your policy.

I recently broke out the Gorilla Glass windshield on a bird strike - it was a grouse or a quail or something so it was a decent sized bird, hit dead center in front of the radar CC housing, and the windshield broke to all corners with about 20-30 cracks instantly.

I was on a trip so I called the closest Jeep dealer (Liberty in Rapid City SD) to see about getting the glass replaced same day.

They indicated that GG did have the first replacement free but unfortunately they had to order it and it was 2 weeks out.

They had a third party installer who they said did most of their glass claims and they called him and he indicated he could replace it with a non-GG windshield that day for $400.

I agreed, and he knocked it out in like 45 minutes. Recalibration of the radar was not required.

My insurance deductible is $1000 so obviously I just paid the $400 out of pocket but all in all I felt that was reasonable for same day service, parts and labor. And the knowledge that recalibration isn't required will probably save me money on the next one I have to get...

Then of course Murphy's Law of windshield replacement came into play and I swear within 30 minutes of leaving the dealer I got behind a semi and it spit a rock out and made a bullet chip on the passenger side.

Gah!!!!!
