Many years ago I spent a week driving down Hatteras surf fishing. I just took some slotted angle, PVC pipe, and some 1/4 20 bolts to make an 8x pole rack attached to my ARB.

Folks, I have looked through the archives, and while there are some great solutions I can't find anything that would work for me. I am trying to find a solution to carrying surf casting (so, long poles) fishing rods, in a way that would not prevent opening the tailgate to access fishing and beach gear. Ideally, something that would attach to the spare tire or the tailgate itself. I have seen the reel rack, seems to be the closest solution but it gets horrible reviews and every single size/make is "out of stock" so I am guessing they no longer make them. I have a receiver hitch rod holder, but the rods extend down low enough to drag in the sand. I would get an adapter to raise that, but again then the whole rack needs to be removed when arriving at the beach. Would prefer not to modify the Jeep by adding a front receiver hitch but may have to take that route. The only other option I've seen is a local company called ruk-rac (or ruc-rak?) but that is a much larger, heavier and very expensive solution.
Yes, before anyone flames me, I'm picky picky picky, like I said I am looking for the Goldilocks solution. Maybe it doesn't exist, but I can't help but hope someone has found or created a quick and easy solution! TIA!

Not sure what rack you are using with your front hitch, but all my front racks on various truck never had a problem, perhaps you are using the racks with the short tubes. I run on the beaches and around town with 12’ rods all the time don’t hit traffic lights or trees and really can’t see ever worrying about dragging rods. I like the front location much better than rear plus you are constantly reminded of the rods as you can see them. Here’s my current rack….Jack

What hitch receiver are you using for the rod rack?

Yeah, I guess my tubes are too short, I've frayed/fractured two rods now. Was using ski racks on top similar to what you have, but when I got my new Jeep I can't use them anymore (sky one touch top needs too much clearance for my cross bars). I will look into something with longer tube, thanks!

Nailed it! You are looking at a double sided wrench attached to the jeep using the cowl bolt. Then I took off my rod holder and mount from my igloo cooler and bolted it to the other side of the wrench. It's 10 foot surf rod. Needs some refinement but I think I can make this work for beach driving.
