I carried 7 extra gallons of gas out to Big Bend National Park. I didn't fill the containers until I headed into the park though. I have a 2 gallon Rotopax mounted on the EZ Rack spare tire mount. The plastic keeps contracting/expanding with the weather changes. I hate that thing.

I also bought a Wavian 5 gallon metal can. It's much better. Easier to use, doesn't spill like the Rotopax. The Wavian I carried in my Jeep and just strapped it to the roll bar so it wouldn't move around. I always drive with my windows down so I wasn't too worried about it. I also put the can outside the Jeep when I was sleeping in there at night. I emptied it into the Jeep on my last day in the park before i headed out.

Personally I'd say thumbs up on Wavian, thumbs down on Rotopax.

Retired from Corrections....I have stories.
I believe your tank has a 21 gallon capacity, I wouldn’t consider that a useful load. Not sure where the pickup is, but I would hate to find myself in a position where I’m starving the vehicle of fuel on a incline. I would bring extra fuel if there’s a chance you will be running low.
I have put in over 20 gallons a few times. If it still displays miles to empty, there is 4 gallon reserve. The most I have ever put in a tank of fuel is 20.6 gallons with out running out i. I have ran out of fuel and it took 21 gallons. I do carry spare fuel. I carry an extra 4 gallons in Rotopax mounted to my tire carrier. In Alaska, I carried an extra 19 gallon of fuel at times. I used a hitch rack to carry the other 15 gallons of fuel. I did not really need it per say on the Dalton Hyw, but gas a Costco was $3.34 a gallon and gas in Coldfoot and the Deadhorse was $7.50 a gallon.

It is about 500 miles from Fairbanks to Deadhorse Alaska and the roads are not going to produce great milage. It was so rough, I ran the tires at 18psi. The blacktop sections were the worse as you can not grade blacktop.

Normally the extra 15 gallons of fuel are on the back of the camper.

It was need in Canada as the cost of fuel could be as high as $10.20 a gallon and it was nice to have the option to bypass a fuel stop and drive another 60 miles or so to a place where the fuel might be $2 a gallon cheaper.

The extra fuel was nice, because sometimes you think, hey I have enough fuel to get the the next station, and this is the next station.

Did you fuel at Dinky Creek Store?
We stayed at Shaver lake so filled up in Shaver lake and did top off at the Dinky store but would not have needed to as we only took like a gallon at that point, but of course like most we were nervous without knowing. We ran it north to south and filled up when we got back to Shaver lake and had plenty of fuel left.

ive been running Rotopax with zero issues for almost 6 years. you can easily fill up without spilling but you gotta toss the California compliant " anti spill" hose.... it leaks everywhere always. get a 5 buck breathable neck and your problems are solved. Thus expansion is a thing with heating/cooling and bouncing around on trails. Burp the Tank when you stop time to time.

Regarding the Rotopax. I installed these so it’s easy to vent the pressure from elevation and or sloshing. Also, as other have said ditch the white screen and add these nozzles. They will still seep slightly at the filler neck on the trail…at least mine do.

In our 2019 with the 2.0t on 38s we fueled up in Madera. My dumb ass missed the last station in shaver lake. We ran the dusy from north to south. Made it back to shaver lake on fumes but we made it. We ran the trail solo so there was almost no idling time but I still say the range anxiety people get is over played. We ran 55 miles of highway with 8k feet of elevation gain before Shaver lake. Ran the entire thing on a half tank. Definitely wouldn't suggest that move, but fueling up in Shaver no JL needs extra fuel to run a 34 mile trail.

….so there was almost no idling time….
I don’t get why people let their Jeeps idle on the trail. If I’m going to be stopped for more than a half a minute I shut it off.
Having finished a couple of snow runs on fumes a couple of decades ago I have almost zero idle time on the trails ever since. It seems most people with me will let their Jeep idle regardless of how long we’re going to be stopped. Waiting half an hour for a recovery? No problem let it idle. Not me.

My wheeling rules have always been I top off the tank at the closest station to the trail head and no idling time on the trail.
It’s rather unnerving heading off the trail with the low fuel light on and praying to make it to the nearest station. Happened to me a couple of times over the years after spending many, many more hours than expected driving through deep snow and of course it’s the middle if the night as well.

How about carrying the spare tire inside the vehicle with the gas attached to the spare tire carrier?
This. Keep the fuel out of the vehicle. Have an accident with fuel inside and you’re apt to become a crispy critter.
