General thoughts on ICE depreciation?

This reminds me when we used to go at it when someone brought up on the Horse Drawn Carriage Forum, "Should I go ahead and buy a horseless carriage as my horse drawn carriage might depreciate too much." Then that person told us they posted this over on the NewModelT Forums. In a nutshell here were the reasons why to not go with a horseless carriage:

- The infrastructure is not there for the roads. The only way to get anywhere is with a horse, donkey or a 2022 Jeep Rubicon with 37's and a 3"lift. Since the Jeep has not been invented yet, we only have two choices
- No ethyl stations. When my horse gets thirsty, I find a lake, pond or river. he gets refueled. Plus my dried oats don't have to be in a water tight steel container like it does for ethyl. Plus, show me how you are going to get ethyl out in the whole US of A. It can't be done.
- When my horse needs new shoes, a pair of pliers, screwdriver and a hammer is all I need. The horseless carriage needs a bunch of unheard of and overly expensive tools to fix their tires.
- I will never get rid of my horse and carriage. Horseless is for the young ones who don't know any better.
- Is ethyl safer than oats and carrots?

As you can see, we all have made the wrong decision to go with ICE. Now we see how EV's are the wrong decision too. In the end, I can watch all of you fail due to you wanting to fix perfection.

I’ve posed this exact question on a Rivian forum so I thought it might be interesting to see the take from this forum.

I’m all in on EVs, so it might be a little more obvious what I think. I’ve had a few conversations with friends and family about when the depreciation graph for ice vehicles will get very steep and to my surprise most of them think little will change in this regard for quite a while.
With so many states that are looking to end ice passenger car sales by 2030-2035, and car loans that get stretched out 6 and 7 years…..When do you think you want to get rid of your ice cars?

Thats 7.5 years away.
Might be the first of many states to want to be greener than their neighbor.

Randall, have you tried coping with your EV in really cold climes, like Canada or at altitude here in Colorado where I live.

Ironically, you very quickly appreciate ICE (not ice).

Personally, I see quite the opposite, severe depreciation on EV's especially as the battery needs to be replaced as they degrade. My crystal ball predicts EV owners dumping their jalopies in droves when learning the true expense of battery replacement. Especially in harsh environments.

Leasing an EV is the only appealing option. Dump it and leave the aging battery to some other poor soul every few years.

-I replaced the damaged SMVS with a shiny new one.
-Only if you're using mineral and not synthetic.
-Four-sided, per scripture. Six-sided axle nuts are considered vain.
-26", and they're maple, thank you very much.
-We don't associate with such prideful individuals.
-I use and recommend Stoltzfus hubs.
-Decrease the pre-load on the leaf springs by two clicks.
-Sixty inches...but per Zebediah, they're Special Order only.

I don't think they forgot anything. The middle class will pay for it. The middle class will be the last to adopt EVs, and by then, there will be no subsidies, and there will be another type of tax to pay for roads.

“Mileage Tax” Ca and I believe others are already working on it. They “ Claim” it will be “instead of” fuel tax. Uh-Huh-Sure!

I didn’t read every post so it may have been said, but I don’t think electric (battery) is the tech that will replace ice. I think it’s the transition vehicle that will encourage other tech such as hydrogen fuel cells or something we haven’t seen yet that actually replaces ICE.

That said, I wouldn’t put stock in an EV holding its value over an ICE vehicle in the future as my personal feeling is it will be just as obsolete.

Believe or not climate change, is very real. let's hope that we've learned by our mistakes.

I heard a few weeks ago that 3% of Millennials think that the Earth is flat. So...not believing in climate change is understandable.

One of the leading Flat Earthers (Mark Sargent) was a video game champion that lives with his mother. Should I go with him or my son who is an Astrophysics major at Penn State? On the other hand, I have told my son how he was wrong on lots of things while growing up, thus video gamer champ that lives with mom is my choice.

Sorry...not buying it. The "popping up everywhere" part. Problem is, extremists (on both sides of the EV issue), post obscure examples and portray them as ubiquitous. Don't fall for it.

Sounds like whataboutism. Usually followed by the ostrich strategy to dealing with global warming. Leave a note to your great grandchildren explaining it to them. Make sure that the note is in a waterproof container because you live in a costal state.

Me thinks ICE will “go away” about the same time EVs work in Fairbanks all year (without garaging) and have good range while keeping the cabin warm. One size does not fit all.

What's your opinion when they had to install the sign of the devil on those carriages? As we all know, that's red and white reflective tape to keep those sinners in their horseless carriages from crashing into us. The worst ones are the JL Jeeps. JL stands for Jebediah Lucifer.

It’s probably going to take a lot longer than you think for gas to be replaced by Batteries. We don’t have the infrastructure for the terribly long wait electric vehicles take to charge. Imagine a gas station full of people that don’t take 5 mins to move on. They take 60. Yuk.

I suggest that you buy stock companies like WAWA. Seems people just live there when refueling. So, spending time recharging is no big deal. You can spend more time getting that perfect hoagie, whatever personalized beverage and usually some beef jerky then top it off to smoke a few cigs or vape. All in the time to recharge your EV. So I see why so many of them are including recharging stations over in NJ.
