Jeep Wrangler JL Fuel Filter Swap IMG_4065

Looks to be a genuine mopar filter, but good lord ?‍?. If this ain’t the original then it’s been run a hell of a long time. 32,600 miles on the odometer at the time of swapping it. Yikes!

Probably OEM from the factory! :giggle:

Smart to wear gloves. I drained the filter like the book/online says, but there was still a crap ton of diesel when I unscrewed the housing. Luckily the kids were outside or a few choice words probably would have been said.

Mine looks like that after 12K miles.
That’s kinda what I’m getting at. The dealer clearly didn’t bother to service it before I bought it. I changed the oil as well for peace of mind, the gunk that came out from supposedly being changed by the dealer has me wondering if they just reset the damn monitor and put it on the lot.

I always do a full fluid and filter swap on used vehicles unless I know the person I bought it from and know the maintenance history.

Same. I’m definitely glad I did this time. For it to have come from such a major dealership, I’m just amazed how little f’s they gave. Just reaffirms my position on avoiding the dealerships at all costs unless absolutely necessary.

Yeah, it's rare to find a dealer that actually does a good job. I'm waiting on my fuel pump recall to make sure their techs get practice on other Jeeps first.

Hell, I haven't even got a phone call saying the parts are in stock yet.

I did this with my dealership as well. I was approximately 4 on the Jeep list. But the service manager also stated they have been doing quite a bit of Ram pumps as well, assuming the 2500/3500, as their is not a lot of EcoDiesel 1500 around here.

The filter does naturally darken with fuel, so it probably isn’t as appallingly-dirty as it might appear.

I can understand that to some degree, but again, the simple fact here is it wasn’t serviced despite the dealer saying so. I haven’t put more than 500 miles on this vehicle since I bought it. No way the filter gets to this state in that short of a time period, especially since it was only on their lot for 25 days.

Forgive me but I’m a little cautious right now with this vehicle seeing as I just came out of another Rubicon that had the potential to burn my house down if the battery decided to off itself randomly. I’d rather be a little overkill on maintenance to preserve this one long term than take any chances. I understand the significant differences involved here seeing as they aren’t even remotely comparable drivetrains, but it’s not worth risking early HPFP failure if I can be that little extra safe and try to prevent it dying while I wait for the recall to get done.

Maybe change your new filter in 500 miles and compare.

IMO I would definitely find a new dealership for future technical service, that has a least 2 diesel mechanics, and continue to do your own maintenance yourself.

This is a perfect example of why I always buy new. So if the dealer changed the filter before you inspected it would you know how the vehicle was maintained by the previous owner. Lip stick on a pig at used car lots.

I don't totally disagree with your thinking, however, trying to find a NEW EcoDiesel JLUR is just about impossible in my area. There's one out here in Sarge that hasn't moved in over 325+ days (coincidentally the same one I test drove a few months ago) because they absolutely refuse to make a deal on it (it's Larry H Miller so go figure).

I'm just glad I took care of it before it became an issue. At least now I can keep track of maintenance on my own and don't have to guess when things need to get done.
