@chevymitchell not disputing the effectiveness of the filters, the fact there are not a lot of burned up pumps is evidence of that, its just the fuel system is built on the assumption that filter maintenance will happen throughout the fuel supply chain. I don't believe that is what happens.

You are right, water is the biggest contaminate in our fuel, not a big problem for diesel as the water will separate out and can be drained out of the separator. Now water in the gasoline we use is a bigger problem because of the ethanol in it! The water and ethanol turns into a sludge that is not good for fuel pumps or anything else for that matter.

“the fuel system is built on the assumption that filter maintenance will happen throughout the fuel supply chain.”

“Now water in the gasoline we use is a bigger problem because of the ethanol in it! The water and ethanol turns into a sludge..”

water and ethanol just turns into diluted ethanol.

So, you believe filters don't get plugged up? Do they have an infinate ability to hold contaminates? Vehicle manufactures recommend you buy fuel from high volume retailers because they will be more likely to maintain the system. They have a name for it, Top Tier, recommended by many auto manufactures including FCA.

As to water in the fuel, the Ethanol will draw and hold water, to a point. Above that point it will separate and settle out and form sludge. Ever hear of someone having trouble starting their car/motorcycle/lawn equipment after storage? This is usually the result of the alcohol and water turning to sludge in the tank. If it will happen in your gas tank it will also happen in the retailers storage tank.

Seems like you’ve read a bit on the internet, but I don’t believe you do this for a living. It simply isn’t a problem. I have emptied and cleaned many gas tanks. Old fuel simply doesn’t burn well, there is no mystery sludge.

also, “top tier gas” has nothing to do with the facilities that sell it to you. It’s all about the detergent additives. See their website.

Well, “emptied and cleaned many tanks” is great if you are the one being paid to do it, not so great if you are the one paying for it.

It’s rust. It’s always rust. Old vehicles being put away with half empty tanks, the top half of the inside rusts like crazy and the fuel won’t hardly burn at all.
