Hey all - I‘ve been Googling and can’t find the exact answer to my question. If I recall, FL allows a sales tax allowance when we trade-in a vehicle where we purchase the new one. So, I trade-in my Jeep for 40k and buy a new one there for 50k, I only get taxed on 10k. If I buy the same 50k Jeep new without a trade-in, I pay taxes on the full 50k, right?

So, here’s my question - Does this still apply when you trade-in and purchase a new vehicle out-of-state and bring it to FL to be registered and tagged?

And ultimately who do you pay taxes to? Do you pay them to the out-of-state dealer and then FL credits you for whatever you paid, or do you pay to FL and not to the out-of-state dealer? Would there be any scenario in any state where you might get double taxed - the out-of-state dealer and then again in FL?
You will never be double taxed. You purchase the vehicle in any state, get the 30 day tag, drive it back and register it with FL and in all actuality the paperwork will have already been submitted by the dealership. I didn’t have a trade in so I can comment on that portion but we flew to PA and bought a vehicle from my wife’s uncles dealership years ago. Things may have changed though. The best bet is to ask the dealership you’re purchasing from what their procedure is. You’ll never be double taxed though and even if you were you would get the difference back I would imagine.

For those that wanted to attend Jeepin With Judd this year, but weren't able to get tickets before they sold out in early October, there's great news! They will be opening up 200 additional tickets at 9am tomorrow morning. These will sell out extremely fast!

Feb 26th-Feb 28th.

Apologies If this isn't the proper place to post this question but not only am I new to Jeeps but also to forums in general.

Im looking to make the first of probably any purchases and Im wondering if anyone has input as to where my money might be best spent. I think the first thing I want to get is a basic recovery set up (bumper, winch, and all the goodies that are associated). Is that a smart first purchase, or might my money be more useful lifting and upgrading the tires? I have a stock 2021 Unlimited Sport and while I don't want to dive face first into hardcore wheeling, I do wanna have confidence that if I end up in a tight spot I'll be alright. I guess my question boils down to : Is it better to have recovery gear first, or make it so Im less likely to need the recovery gear by upgrading the vehicle?

I went out to Tosohatchee yesterday and almost got stuck in some mud on the road that parallels 528.

Thanks!!

The out of state dealer will figure the FL taxes for you and yes you still get the trade in break. I have bought my Jeeps in GA but register in NM which is my home state.

So i have a 2021 unlimited sport also and i went with a little of both of those. Like you i wont be doing hardcore wheeling yet. i would say 30-40% of my time will be spent off-roading.

so i went the route of a recovery strap, shackles and stuff to help if i get stuck in a group or wheeling with someone else, i can at-least get pulled out.

Also our suspension is lower than the rubicons but by 1-1.5 inches so i picked up a set of rubicon take off springs and shocks with low miles for $125 and that added height to order some some true off road hybrit at/mt 35 tires and new wheels.

The winch in my opinion is great and a necessity if you go wheeling alone a lot, but since im a newbie I will limit my off-roading to groups or at-least with another jeep so the recovery strap would be more than good.

hope this helps in some way guide you but i debated back and forth and reasearched for the 2 months i have owned mine so far lol.

Thats a pretty good point! I definitely won't be venturing out by myself any time soon so maybe the winch might be a bit much for now. I think I just got freaked out yesterday cause I made one wrong turn at a very mild trail and ended up looking like I was gonna get stuck on my own.

Thanks for the feedback! Im gonna look into the springs and shocks

for the springs and shocks i hunted on facebook marketplace, craigslist, offerup, the highest i have seen them was $500 and the lowest was the one i found for $125 which had 20 miles.

Most definitely one of the most cost to benefit upgrades us sports can do. All you need is the springs and shocks and if you can find them from a 4-door hardtop with a tow package you will get the most lift frm it. As the spring rates change from factory for the different setups.

I do have some rubi jlur take off suspension with tow package and rock rails and plastic front bumper with led fogs and led turn signals for sale. Depending on what and how much anyone gets I can work on pricing.
I'm in Jax

IMHO, Tires will give you the biggest bang for the buck. The highway tires that come on those tend to fill up with mud and sand which causes you to lose traction.

My Jeep sees way too much highway (45K in 16 months) due to my job but I have been running the NItto Ridge Grapplers for the past 20K miles and they still have 3/4 tread left on them. Did a beach run over the holidays and didn't have any issues with traction. I will admit I am a fan of them.

Talk to @MORTON about his dealership because they installed his Rubicon stuff and warrantied it.

The jeep Mod bug will hit you and you will spend money on a variety of things. Look for mods that give you the best benefit. @MORTON is running 33's on a Sport with the Rubicon suspension and I feel he could go just about anywhere he wanted to. A winch will tend to give you confidence that can get you really stuck. I bought my first winch in the early 90's and bought the second for my Jeep early 20 when I broke a terminal off of the 1st moving it from a hitch mount. I have used a winch more for landscaping and getting others out of a bind than I have recovering myself. NICE to have but definitely not the first thing you need to buy.

Congrats on your purchase and above all have fun,
Andy

I agree, TIRES are the biggest bang for the buck. We can all be honest with ourselves and admit that we all love how a kitted out rig looks but most of that gear is rarely needed.

Let me make this suggestion: join a local jeep club and go on some local rides. See what they recommend for the terrain and conditions near you.

You can build a Jeep that can tackle nearly any conditions (rock climbing, deserts, mud, snow, or a little of everything) and you get to decide what works for you.

There is also nothing at all with enjoying it as the worlds best convertible.

Welcome to the family and the forums.

@Catiajockey I think you hit the nail on the head haha its definitely a plus that a bumper with a winch just looks badass. Also @X99104 I think you're right in that a winch might give me a little too much confidence for a total newbie.

You guys give some compelling arguments for the tires. Im glad I asked cause I'll be honest, I had cart full of stuff and I damn near ordered it all.

I've been enjoying the heck out of the car and Im glad to find that its such a welcoming community. I've been getting my first jeep waves and its been great keeping track with my kid how many we get when we go driving.

Thanks for the input and warm welcome, everyone!
