I don’t get the Owners Manual procedure. It’s easy enough, just don’t understand why the engine shutdown, neutral transfer case, then restart. Is there something on the automatics? My manual JLR seems to pop in and out of neutral transfer case easily either way. Doing the reverse/forward test to confirm seems prudent. I am curious if there is an actual tow mode that we are setting the computers to prior to towing it with the start sequence. Anyone know?

I think the restart is just to confirm t case is actually in N. Same sequence for flat tow since I can remember.

As mentioned above, it confirms the vehicle transfer case is actually in neutral. If you restart the vehicle and it moves in forward or reverse, it's likely because the t-case is not in neutral. It's a safety check.

My two-door automatic has a a dash light that reads "Neutral" when the transfer case is indeed in neutral. It helps with the vague feel of the t-case lever.

Yup, but the Jeep procedure is engine off, neutral, engine on, and test. If there isn’t a reason for it, it makes no sense.
