Exhaust note change

Who has noticed there exhaust changing from closed to open by itself? We took a road trip Saturday by way of 4 lane interstate. We were running 70ish mph. We were gaining slightly on an OTR trk. We were running closed exhaust "because they're always open". I decided to pass the semi for clear hwy ahead. The jeep dropped a couple of gears and as it got to 3500 rpms the exhaust opened up by itself for free flow music. The exhaust closed by itself as the rpms came back into the 3000 rpm range. Checked them again closed and they opened at 3500 rpm by itself again. Anyone else have this happen to them?

They are designed to open under throttle.

that's all as intended. a lot of cars are designed that way. I don't know that it really does much for performance - it's for pleasure

I had not read on here where this was the way the exhaust worked. Makes sense, thanks for the reply's.
