Looking for some insight on this - last week after driving around town all day, in the last few minutes of my trip, the engine felt sluggish along with the smell of burnt rubber. I shut it down for an hour, then drove home on the highway for an hour - all was well. Since that day, everything has been fine driving highway and city. Today, I made a two hour trip on the highway. On my return, the start/stop warning light came on immediately after turning it on. Everything was fine until the last few minutes of driving, when I was back in the city, the engine got sluggish - as in I was really having to push the gas to go. I noticed the burning rubber smell again when I parked it at home. Any ideas of what I may be dealing with here?

Belt is good. Just drove 20 minutes across town and coolant temp stayed between 185 and 220.

Could you have a sticking brake caliper? That would probably account for both symptoms and could even explain why it's not consistent. Do you notice it pulling to one side? Check your wheels for excessive brake dust. Or maybe pull them off and examine for uneven brake wear.

This may just be it. Some slight pulling when braking at highway speed. Going to check first thing in the morning. Thank you.

Update:
  • I discovered an oil leak last night. Confirmed by mechanic to be coming from the valve covers. Hopefully remedied this with a bottle of BlueDevil Oil Stop Leak.
  • Visible brake dust on the front left wheel. Mechanic drove it and tested the temp around all hubs - all were consistent and not out of the norm. He felt no pulling, although I have experienced some pulling on the highway when braking. Chocked it up to less than stellar brake pads.
  • Scanned it and nothing came up that could be remotely related to what I’m experiencing.
  • Stop/start warning light has been on and off today, typically coming on shortly after starting the engine, then clearing itself with restarting and staying off for 10-15 minute trips.
  • Made a 1.5 hour trip home and the stop/start warning light came on in the middle of my drive + the check engine light. Did not experience any sluggishness or misfiring. I’m thinking the Aux battery may need to be replaced?

Check your exhaust. Catalytic converter plugging up. Check pressure at tail pipe. I had this happen on a GC.

Check if that oil leak is dripping on an o2 sensor. That will cause intermittent misfires and that side of the engine to run rich and clog the cat. Start/stop and check engine light. p0300, p0301, p0133, p0171 codes. Happened to me. After fixing the leak I had to replace the o2 and the cat to make the engine run right.

Oh, and I replaced the batteries first too. Didn't help.

I’ll reiterate… This. Had these exact symptoms on our 19 JLU until the brake line finally collapsed completely, clamping the brake on the rotor turning it red hot.

I don't want to be a party pooper, but any oil "stop leak" product should be taken off the market. It has been the dagger in the heart of many an engine.
