Hmm... I was curious about the smell... I have my track bar weld recall appointment a month out from now.. I'll bring up the coolant smell issue.

JL-Family, did you ever find out what caused the smell in yours?

Heater core replacement fixed it. Yes, there was a coolant smell for a few weeks but it is gone. Has been a few months now...all good. Slight rattle in dash, which is what I was afraid might happen...but slight and sporadic.

I took my 2018 JL into the dealership last Tuesday for the coolant smell coming from the vents. They do not do loaner vehicles so I was out of a car until Friday evening when I went to pick it up. They told me that they could find nothing wrong and didn’t smell anything coming from the vents. As soon as I get in a start the vehicle the fumes almost knock me out. Now to try another dealership and be without a vehicle again.

+1 for smoke and burning plastic odor.

I drove home - about a 15 minute drive - parked in the garage and noticed a very strong burning plastic smell when I got out. It was a sweet smelling odor, but not like antifreeze / coolant. More of a plastic smell. There was also a faint white smoke coming from the engine bay from the right wheel well.

It happened late in the evening, so I haven't contacted a dealership yet. I'm dreading doing that - seems like it's always a battle with the people that are supposed to be helping you.

@JeepCares , are you listening? Your owners have nauseating, potentially toxic fumes emanating from their vehicles. Absolutely nothing about that is normal or acceptable, under any circumstance. Whether it's faulty heater cores, plastic labels or tags contacting hot components, clutches, or whatever - this is not ok.

Other details of my particular circumstance:
  • Brand new, 2020, less than 400 miles
  • EcoDiesel, automatic
  • I had my climate controls on automatic - so I really don't know if the heat was running or not. It might have been - it was about 60F outside, and I had HVAC set to 70F. But it didn't feel like the heat was running. (i.e., no perceptible warm air coming from the vents)
  • No modifications of any kind under the hood or in the area of the smoke and odor.
  • Smoke and odor coming from the right front wheel well, from behind the splash guard.
  • No smoke inside the cabin or through the AC vents.

That's a great point. I hadn't considered the ESS battery as a potential source. I'll be sure to ask the dealership to look at that as well, especially given its troublesome track record. Thanks @TEXGOAT
