The idea is in slippery conditions it works as awd and sends power to the wheels with the most grip rather than just spinning. For general driving in mixed conditions its "better" because it will adapt to the road surface. For wheeling its bad because its weaker.
I get the idea. But 4h without the auto has worked and it's stronger. And as we all know Jeep screwed up making a normal clutch, so I don't have alot of confidence in a complicated computer controlled transfer case clutch system.

I told the old lady if you are in conditions where you need 4h just put in 4h part time. She knows how to drive and doesn't need even more computers fucking with her.

Bring that little turdbox round here and I'll let you drive down just one particular road and after we dig you and what's left of your Jeep out of the snowy field, I'll personally drive you to the hospital in the back of my bus so you can get a seatectomy to remove your seat from your ass after the massive sucker pucker from hitting the snowy curves.
I learned to drive there man I remember what it was like. Did just fine in my 89 Beretta, my old mans early 00s Impala, our 1500 Chevy conversion van 🤷‍♂️ not to mention my buddies S10, my wifes dakota, a buddies Transam WS6 and many other vehicles.

The only time they really fail is in the 392s because they just arent beefy enough for the torque.

I thought I saw some failures mentioned here on other engines, but it was a case of people using auto on the trail. Regardless, I doubt we will need it. That's why a non auto transfer case made the "spare parts wish list". It's something that if I run across a used one cheap I will pick up just in case. Or if it does fail unexpectedly, I will replace with a non auto for sure.

"Just fine" no doubt. The weather has also gotten much more fucked here if that's possible. Not sure how much you travelled out my way either. 4A is just better for some situations. No need to shift into 4H and worry about drivetrain on dry pavement at 40-50mph then shift back to 2H and back in a 1000 feet just to repeat the same over the next 5 miles. It's also nice not to even have to think about it during storms. Last year we had a storm that dumped over 7 inches of rain on Mt. Airy in a half hour and 2-4 inches in the surrounding area. It was insane.

Like I said its great for not wanting to worry about paying attention and having the skill to be able to control a vehicle if things get a little slippery.

It's not about skill, paying attention or a little slippery. It's about wear on a system, not having enough time to stop or shift into 4H or avoid other idiots that don't know what they're doing as well as convenience.

They don't appear to make it for the 2.0 or at least it wasn't on the configurable drop down. But the 3.6 version is $4-5k. I could probably get quite a few used Rubi non auto transfer cases for that price. We currently don't wheel hard or frequently enough for that kind of upgrade.

Now for Earl, that could use an upgrade to the harder to find 4:1 manual transmission case, That might be an option. 🤔

Itll be the same transfer case either way, so long as you spec for an auto its good to go.

Regardless of attention and skill sometimes unexpected shit suddenly happens. Dark country road, summer, just over a high spot there was an unseen low spot deeply flooded by an irrigation fail. Hitting the unseen deep water with my AWD 4R immediately coming to a stop and the rear end coming around. I mashed the throttle and the front wheels pulled it straight. There wouldn’t have been sufficient time to shift, especially when being slammed forward, to the left, and steering to prevent rollover at the same time.
everything has pro’s and con’s.
