Is anyone carrying dual spare tires externally?
If so, how are you doing this?

Where in AK do you drive that you're concerned about having two spares?

I guess you could do a roof rack (hard mounted, to carry the weight). What a PITA to get it up and down though.

I would instead suggest to carry a compressor and tire repair kit, sidewall repair kit, and emergency valve stem kit, in addition to your spare tire. That way you can have a spare, and if you have another flat you may be able to repair at least one of the two tires.

The Haul Road.
Taylor Hwy.
Top of the World Hwy.

While there are other roads (such as the McCarthy Road) that will destroy tires beyond repair most of them aren’t nearly as many miles from a replacement tire.

I’m confident that one spare and repair equipment/supplies is enough for most everywhere else on/near the AK road system.

While I’ve driven most of those roads with a single spare I ended up with a second spare when I bought rims for my winter tires - if there’s a good system to carry a second spare I’d carry it on the more remote trips.

It’s highly unlikely that I’d use a roof based solution for all of the reasons you mention and more.

I do carry all of the above repair tools - I’ve repaired a number of tires with safety seal kits- they work great for screws nails and small rock punctures. Haven’t done a sidewall repair yet and I have my doubts about how well they’d work in the cold - if those concerns are unfounded I’d like to know what sidewall repair kits folks have successfully used in the cold.
