So my 19 Sahara I just purchased has an engine tick on the passenger side. It’s at a buddy’s shop at the moment tore apart. Intake cam lobes are wore down and a rocker failed. So I bought parts to fix and wondering what oil I should use from here on out? My last change I used PUP 0w20. Should I change to a 5w20 or 5w30?

I'm going to run 5W-30 in the summer for 6 months, I'm going to run 0W-30 for winter 6 months.

Your oil wasn't the issue. It's the cheap shitty rocker arms. Supposedly they have improved these, but when I replaced mine, I couldn't tell the difference.

Do you know what year they improved them?

When I ordered these earlier this summer, the dealership told me they've changed the part number twice (AB to AD) since last year. Not sure if that's true or not and if it is, I have no idea what's changed. I compared them to my old ones and they looked exactly the same.

Apparently, they've updated the cams as well.

Usually, in engineering, a letter change is minor change. A major change will likely get a new part number.

Certainly, but this is Jeep were talking about. Even a small change can go a long way.

So.....I was out of town for a week. We took my wife's car so the Jeep sat the whole week. This morning when I started my 21 JLU 3.6 to head to work, it idled pretty high for a few seconds like it always does on cold starts after sitting for a couple days. But what was new was the loud ticking.

It's rare that my Jeep sits a week without being started. As a matter of fact, I don't think it's sat that long ever in at least the last year or so. After returning from work this evening and letting the Jeep sit a couple hrs, I restarted it again. No ticking.

I've read about the rocker/lifter ticking thing and how it's a common fail on the 3.6. My question is, is the ticking common or expected after the Jeep sits several days? Or does this indicate an issue and I need to schedule an appt to have it checked out?

It's normal to have some top-end noise on a cold start after the engine has been sitting for a long time. Gravity works on the oil over time, and after a couple days of the engine not running, it's all down in the pan and needs to work back into everything.

It's when the engine is warm and well-exercised and it's still ticking.... then you're screwed.

Maybe take a video of the startup if you can next time the engine sits for a couple of days.

Gotcha. Good to know. I will monitor it and confirm the ticking is only on a cold starts.
