Doors Off Driving Just Impractical?

I hate to say this, but what do you expect with the top and all doors off. I mean there is going to be some serious wind if you are heading down the freeway as you are totally exposed. I love it- the open feel-have the 8.4 Alpine stereo and blasting some VH.

Ran it full naked 3.5 hrs one way 1hr stop then back home all @ 75-85mph down interstate with radio blasting one of the best trips I have taken. Hat will get sketchy when passing 18 wheelers or strong cross wind gust, but you don't get sleepy at all

Jeep newb warning the sun did kick my butt sunscreen was added to the Jeep kit after that.

I turn my hat around backwards and haven’t had an issue. I was running 75 yesterday with the front doors and freedom panels off - hat stayed on. There is definitely wind buffeting when you’re running in a cross wind but I’ve ridden a naked motorcycle for years, so I’m used to wind.

my grandfather had to quit school in the 3rd grade and go to work in an underground coal mine. He got a break from that when he was drafted into WW2. he never mentioned anything at all about the wind during the war when riding in his jeep.

My daughter says it tangles up her ponytail when she rides in my jeep with the top down. different world we live in now.

No. Doors off is perfectly rational and sensible, as I try to explain to my wife all of the time.

I had to one-door it the other day because according to her, putting a two year old in a car seat with no door is “irresponsible” and “unsafe”. Hrmph.

I have this argument all the time. It’s the car seat that’s providing the protection. The door is just there to block the wind and keep people from stealing the car seat.

Riding a motorcycle naked...now that’s the feeling of real freedom right there.

First Jeep, had it since November. I was looking forward to stripping it down and doing as much top-down, doors off driving as possible in the nicer months, bought some mirrors and am ready to go. I've had the doors off twice now and the problem is the wind effects. I basically can't go anywhere from my house without getting on roads that you'd typically drive 50+ MPH. So of course I expected some 'wind in your hair' type stuff, but first time out, the wind got so bad it felt like my hat was going to blow off. So OK, I thought I wore the wrong hat, need a tighter hat. I have one so I'll wear that one. Next time out, with the tighter hat, wind felt like it would blow that one off too, and even it was so bad it felt like my eye-glasses were going to blow too. So I'm driving down the road, sitting on my hat holding my eyeglasses with one hand, steering with the other, manual transmission - that's a no go. To be fair, they both were somewhat windy days, but still. So is that how it goes, you really can't do those speeds without the doors? Or was it just bad weather for it, keep trying? Thanks for your advice.

The hat can slip over the gear shift and you tuck the bill under the parking brake. It'll stay in place that way (assuming you're not using a one size fits all).

Also, I've found wearing the bill of the hat lower on your head and not letting it sit up makes a difference as does lowering your head slightly and not leaning your head back.

Seat position plays a part, too. Leaning back to far in the seat, or pushing it back to far allows more wind to get in to you. Fortunately, even at 6', my seat position is in a spot where the windshield keeps most of the wind off of me.

I’m with you OP. With the top and doors off there’s a LOT of wind to deal with. Even if you like that sort of thing. Particularly if you drive any appreciable distance at highway speeds. After the first time I determined that I need a lanyard to hold onto my glasses because I came close to losing them in a nice gusty crosswind. Wife lost her hair thingy and made a magnificent Willie Mays type catch to stop it flying away. Not for everyone everyday. I’ll save it for calm days, short trips, or slow speeds. I have a Jtops too that I haven’t put on yet, that may help some.

I’m looking forward to trying it.
I did pop the freedom panels off one day and kept the windows up. I enjoyed that.
But haven’t done the full naked yet.

Simple solution for the OP, top off doors on. If it gets too windy for your hat roll up the windows, and then when you're in a slower speed area roll the windows back down.

I'm pretty sure it would be illegal for your wife to drive the Jeep while she's fully naked. Most places have indecency laws.
