We had a windshield replaced last year in our 2021 Wrangler Willys Unlimited. I doesn't seem to work after the windshield replacement. Do I dare take it to the Jeep dealer for calibration or a place like Safelite? Is it a passive or active calibration?

Did the windshield place charge you for a calibration? If not, I would probably start with the dealership to see if any of it falls into a warranty category. Here in CA Safelite charges $817 for the calibration.

I was lucky when I had my windshield replaced last year and Safelight did the replacement/calibration for $180 through my insurance. I called two local Jeep dealerships initially who both said they could replace and calibrate, but wouldn't quote me a price over the phone. NOTE: if you go to have it calibrated, be sure and remove the Tazer if you have one, I failed to do that initially and the Safelight guy had to come back out a couple days later because it was interfering with his equipment.

I'd bet you $100 safelite is NOT doing the calibration. You need the factory scan tool hooked up with a hotspot and drive the vehicle running the calibration. With the calibration routine running you need to drive a couple of miles on the highway for it to re-learn itself. When I was looking at them to replace my gorilla glass windshield I saw that and burst out laughing. No shot in hell they're doing that, but they sure as hell will charge you for it.

That being said, JLs shouldn't need calibration for replacing the windshield. Unlike our other vehicles the sensor isn't mounted directly to the windshield and isn't touched during replacement. That's why you get the camera shield when you buy the vehicle new so you can slip it over behind the rearview mirror incase you decide to drive it with the windshield folded down. If it isn't working correctly something else is wrong or damaged

Safelite's excuse (which personally I don't believe) was that the thickness of the windshield glue or thickness of the new glass could throw it off enough that a re-calibration is required. Here is the difference in their quote:

without calibration

I just mean that there's a 99% chance that they'll charge you for a "calibration" without actually doing anything. No lights on the dash? It's good to go!

Had my 2020 windshield replaced by Safelite. They took it out for a 10 min drive to recalibrate, so unless they were hitting the Dunes it seems like on mine it was completed. $100 deductible from my insurance for everything.

I had my Gorilla Glass windshield recently replaced by the dealership under warranty (you get one free replacement). I explicitly asked if it had been calibrated. They didn't know, so they called the glass shop. No, it had not.

And yes, the Advanced Safety Group is working fine without calibration.

Ugh.

Most Jeep dealers are too incompetent to properly handle the complexities of these advanced features.

I would guess that Safelite has many times more experience with calibration than the Jeep dealer - or...any dealer for that matter. Get the zero deductible windshield protection. Mine covers glass + recalibration.
