Awesome idea and great write-up! I really appreciate you posting your idea as I have been looking for a way to store some gear in the back under lock and key while the top is off. I spent most of today building out the same setup and it turned out great!

That was quick. It works great, doesn't it! Perfect for the air compressor! Glad it all worked out, looks awesome!

Here's my DIY 50 cal. ammo cans that I attached to the tailgate. They are lockable and removal. I keep my air compressor in one and some recovery gear and other misc. things in the other. I needed something secure to keep items when I have my hardtop!
This is awesome. Thanks for sharing!

Well done to both @HiJinx69 and @Bigjake .

You and bigjake should be working for FCA quality control , at very high salaries . Then FCA could get rid of some of their turds , and improve everything to our satisfaction .

Looks like I’ll be tackling this tomorrow or Thursday. My .50cal cans are loaded with 5.56 and are pretty beat up so, just by dumb luck, I found new steel .50cal cans at Costco with a .30cal can inside it for $15. Ordered the can lock hardware and magnets from Amazon yesterday. I’ll head on up to Lowe’s today for the hardware. Thanks HiJinx69 for the awesome idea.

I think I might order a couple of these and install next weekend. These have a locking tab included.
Wish I saw these before I bought mine from Princess auto (Canadian version of harbour freight I believe)

Got mine installed this week. Glad I bought plenty of magnets, as it seemed everything was rattling back there. I added some window weather stripping to cushion the lower ends against the tailgate and stop the noise there. Now she’s quiet. Thanks again @HiJinx69

Do you know if the clearance under the ammo boxes is enough to clear the freedom top bag with panels inside? EDIT: Nevermind, found my answer above. Nope.

@HiJinx69 thanks for the awesome idea. I went with the slimmer cans that quadratec had. They are black and have the lock.

Any chance you can take a top down picture of that ammo can and the corner wedge on the driver’s side of the rear door (where the latch is)? Do those cans protrude further than that? Anybody with the .50 cal cans, please share as well.

If you look at post #20, you can see how far the 50 cal. cans go past the fattest part of the gate on the driver’s side. I just measured it at 3 inches beyond. Hope it helps.
