Here's my DIY 50 cal. ammo cans that I attached to the tailgate. They are lockable and removal. I keep my air compressor in one and some recovery gear and other misc. things in the other. I needed something secure to keep items when I have my hardtop off.

What did you use to mount the ammo boxes onto the 3 threaded holes

i meant the metal bar that is mounted onto the threaded holes i shouldve been more clear
Look at post #20, between picture 8 and 9. The bolt size is there. Hope that’s what your’re looking for.

You inspired me before I got my JL, but now that I have it I decided not to mount ammo boxes, but the Truck Luggage bag that came out of my pickup. Mounted on strut-channel with spring nuts, so it can easily be moved! Cheers!

I made a similar locking mechanism for an ammo box on my mini lathe. I use the ammo box for when I'm flying somewhere and taking multiple handguns with me. It takes up less space in my suitcase than the flat plastic case that I have that is big enough for two handguns.

I don't know if I will install an ammo box on my tailgate when my JL comes in, but I'll keep this idea around, just in case... Thanks...

I have a 2001 TJ but am planning on getting a JL soon.

In the TJ, the spacing between the back seat and the tailgate is a perfect fit for the long dimention for a .30 cal ammo can. I have a can for tools, one for towing, one for a first aid kit and one for "stuff".

Do anyone know if a .30 cal ammo can (.50 would be better) will still fit longwise between the back seat and the tail gate?

Thanks for posting the ideas and details on this one, I figured I’d contribute as well. I started with the original post and noticed the gap between tailgate and cans (7.62/30 cal skinnies) and thought it would be perfect for a table mount. I used some left over cabinet grade 3/4” and scrolled the iconic logo with lights perfect size for my rambler cups. In “table mode” the top is held on via aluminum 90degree angle pieces (light weight and sturdy - lying around in the garage) and when in “stored mode” is held in place by some rare earth neodymium magnets 1.26” size. I painted the back and grill/lights white to match my Jeep and trunk box and herculined the top. If I didn’t already have the wood available I was going to go the acrylic cutting board route to save weight but this came out well enough that I am keeping it “as-is”

Oh one other thing.... I elected to “pull and flip” storage wise for two reasons: 1 better cup placement when a table 2. The angle brackets and magnets do NOT limit flipping the tops when in stored mode as a nice space 1/4” is provided making for easy access to the ammo cans.

Very nice! Do you mind posting Picts of it from the top and side? Like to see where the hinge is in relation to the cans. Thanks!

So no hinge in my case BUT a piano hinge mounted to the bottom of the cans with magnets to secure up and down would work even better IFF you prefer a lower mounting point for the table at the hinge fulcrum. That might be a mod I make to this design.... ;-) thanks for the idea. I have to see if I like the table lower or higher now, and if the wife will allow me to play with it more. She has a big wood project she wants me to take on at the moment so guess the above mod will wait a bit. Cheers all!

I used some old, left over angle iron (aluminum) from a garage opener install a few years ago. I probably originally bought that at Home Depot in the hardware department as I know they typically have materials that would work for something like this.
