Hopefully, one day, FCA will release the trail rail management system so we can utilize more options to add storage. What I’m seeing here is the use of the already existing mounting points for the trail rail that goes on the tailgate.

I’ve thought about mounting something similar (modular rails) using the existing tailgate and floor mounting points.

Really good idea, thank you for this thread.

I run my Jeep topless and doorless full-time, and have been looking to solve the storage problem.

I ordered a Smittybilt rear storage lockbox:
http://www.smittybiltdepot.com/Smit...63.aspx?t_c=67&t_s=414&t_pt=3847&t_pn=S/B2763

Your solution is elegant and has advantages though.
- Lighter weight.
- More trunk space available.
- Retains access to the under-floor and jack storage areas.

If things don't work out with the box, I'll definitely give it a try.

Here is more info on the setup.
Ammo can dimensions: 5.5W x 7hH x 11L inches
The dimension from edge of ammo can to back of rear seat is 25 inches
The cans can be opened from the inside, so locks are needed to deter sticky fingers.
The freedom panels will not fit flat with the rear seats up. You can use the bag hooked up to the back of the rear seats standing up as instructed on the bag. Or, you can otherwise fold down rear seats and lay it flat.
Hope this answers most of the questions.

Bolts used: M6-1.0 x 30MM
Creative use of shims/spacers to clear the edge of plastic panel.

Bonus! I used small neodymium magnets (STRONG!) to keep handle and lock from rattling around.

One last thing to note. The locking hardware does not come with ammo cans. I got them through Amazon, probably on eBay as well. You will have to drill a hole to attach them.
Happy DIY'ng!

Thank you! Your response is most excellent and very exciting! I wasn't sure about the wing nuts holding the cans on, but it makes sense if every you need the few extra inches in a pinch. Did you consider drain holes in the bottom in case some water gets in?

No holes needed! Most ammo cans have a rubber seal on the lids.

Thanks. Absolutely appreciate all the info. After seeing your pics with the tailgate close, my idea of having the latches tight up against the sides when tailgate is closed definitely won’t work now I that I can see the layout of it. This post has been so helpful. Great job!

Very nice. I have the Bestop instatrunk, which is very handy, but during the winter I really miss having an easy way to access the storage area back there (my soft top rear window isn't much fun to wrangle). This might be a nice replacement.
