Hi everyone

I am about to change my differential oil for the first time and have a few questions. I have the limited slip differential in the rear and the “regular“ Dana 30 in the front (I drive a Sahara).

1. What kind of oil do I need to use for the limited slip diff and should I use different oil for the front axle?

2. How much oil will I actually need to get in order to change all of the diff fluid.

Looking forward to hearing what all of you think!

Cheers

Jeep Wrangler JL Diff fluid question Untitled-1

I would not use 75w-140 in Canada in the winter.

We had some trucks in Alaska that failed axles due to 75w-140 solidifying.

Does your 2020 Sahara have the Tow Package from the factory on it? IF, you do have the tow package, do you ever tow or are you planning on towing during the next say 20,000 mi.

Will need to know this in order to give you correct info..

Hi guys,
Thank you so much for your feedback. I really appreciate it and am happy to be part of this Jeep community.

To answer the questions:
- No, I do not tow with my Jeep or have the tow package. And it gets really cold up here so that's a good point.

I am leaning towards the Royal Purple 75W90 oil. It already has the additive for limited slip differentials in it.

However, can I also use this for my front axle? And how much will I actually need? I never changed the diff fluid before so I'm excited to try it out on my own.

Cheers

Yes, Royal Purple 75W90 or Valvoline 75W90 both have necessary additive.

Have 4 qt. bottles on hand. You will use the same fluid in front and rear diffs. based on your saying, no tow package.

You also need thread sealer for the drain and fill plugs.

IF, you can get Valvoline 75W90 in their FlexFill pouches, they are a great way to go. So, so easy to get fluid into the diffs and pretty much no cleanup.

Read at each of the threads listed here for info on your upcoming diff fluid change.
