I feel better knowing I am not the only one that back his soft top with the sunrider open into the garage, thanks tma77.

The sad fact is I have done it twice, once pulling in (no damage) and once backing in (the pictures shown). The lesson learned, if you are in the moment, enjoying the open air, music cranked...always pull in your garage :)

I had just finished the inaugural oil change in my JLU, and was backing the vehicle out of the garage after first carefully removing the pair of jack stands. I felt and heard a thump, after which I immediately stopped.

In my eagerness to finish up with things, I had forgotten to remove the oil drain pan that I had positioned behind one tire, so as to have room to easily pull the jack stands from under the vehicle.

There was just enough momentum to splash warm 5W-30 up on to the frame rail, the inside sidewall of said tire, and of course across my otherwise reasonably clean concrete floor.

I was only really bothered by the loss of my 20 year old drain pan, which was one of my first purchases as a new homeowner and which had been used for countless DIY fluid changes. All those years, and I never forgot to move it out of harm's way...until that day.

Kitty litter was used to arrest the worst of the oil on the floor, and WD-40 and lots of rags assisted with cleanup of the Jeep itself.

And if that's the worst boner that I ever pull with the Jeep, that'll be just fine. :)

The other morning I had my soft top folded back (not fully, windows still in) and closed it to fit in my work parking deck. Fully intending to re-open it after work, I left the latches open. You may see where this is going.

After a long day at work, it didn’t even cross my mind to open the top. The top had other plans. At about 35mph the top flew open and scared the absolute shit out of me. Luckily there was no damage, but I felt like an idiot.

So as the title states, what’s the dumbest thing you’ve done in your Jeep?

And before someone says it, “conceiving my child” doesn’t count.

Edit: I also don’t consider accidentally flipping your Jeep on a legit trail or something similar, dumb. Don’t really know your limits till you hit them. So you're off the hook @alksion. (Sorry brother, you have the best attitude on Earth, I figured you could handle a slight jab. We’re all glad you’re ok!)
I did the sand thing. Once.
New rule. Always latch the soft top.

I learned the hard way that you *really* need to make sure the bottom tab on the side windows is fully clicked in before you give the keys to your daughter. Those side windows are expensive suckers!

Not in my Jeep but at one time in 2011 I rented a car for a business trip from Vegas to LA. When driving back from LA, I pulled into a gas station to fill up. The fuel door on the car was on the passenger side. I started to pump gas and left the nozzle in to clean the windshield and then went inside the convenience store to buy bottled water. Came back, started the car and and after a few feet going forward, heard a metallic sound, and realized what I did.
The pump hose disconnected cleanly from the pump, and fell on the ground with the nozzle still inside the fuel door.

Thankfully there was no spill, but the pull put a small dent by the fuel door. I gave my insurance details to the station owner and they charged my insurance $700.

Jumped into Jeep and pulled off forgetting to tie down windshield got up to speed and guess what decided to put itself right-damn windshield I know I said the s word and I think I almost did the s word. I had two mishaps last summer:

In a hurry to remove the hardtop using my electric ceiling hoist which I use by looping nylon straps under the top and then lift from a center point. Unfortunately I accidentally wrapped the straps under the roll bar. The good news;I figured it out before I pulled the hoist down from theceiling. The bad news; I figured it out when the forceof the pull cracked the fiberglass top at the top corner ofleft Rear door. I subsequently the learned the art of working with fiberglass.

Soecobd event. Helping a friend plug a flat motorcycle tire in the wind, Hard to lift the hood to attach my compressor. Wind gust pulled the hood from the prop and slammed it against the windshield header. $215 in PDR work the damage was fixed. I now have Redline hood lifts.

Hoping for a better summer 2022.

Swapping tires today. Loosened both sets of front lug nuts. Jack it up. Took driver side front off. Realized I didn’t have a thin wall 19mm for my new wheels. So put driver front back on and torqued to go to the hardware store for a socket.

Well I completely forgot to retighten the passenger front lugs. I only realized this after I got back home! Luckily it was a short trip and I hadn’t completely loosened them off. But it could have ended VERY BADLY!!! ?‍♂

I never have nor ever will do anything dumb in my Jeep. I can't afford it! I'm not rich like the rest of you!
Well you might have been... before you ponied up for your new Jeep. I used to think I was doing okay cash flow wise until I started modding my 22 JLR!

Tried to sneak into a gated community (never mind why) by following a resident with a key card. He was onto me and stopped just past the gate arm so that it would come down on my hood. Nice scratch. I thought it was pretty funny.

Ouch. I did that exactly once in my life (so far) and I was lucky enough to have the nozzle just pop out of the car and land on the ground. All I had to do was feel stupid.

Haha true story!!! I was okay before I bought my first house and first Jeep all in the same year! I just bought my first mods, bumpers and a winch. I was originally eyeing lift and wheels but this thing is so freaking capable stock, I figured I need self recovery before more capability. I already have more ground clearance and traction than friends with 31s on tacomas and 4Runners, etc.

im excited!

I'm assuming I'm also not the only one who has tried to open the hood all the way (to the windshield) in a parking deck, only to have the low ceiling assert its authority.

Parking decks and my Jeep ownership got beef.
